Royal guitar amp

Soo.. Upon looking through the bundles of junk my dad has, i came across this... So, I phoned my dad to find out that this once did work, but he took the main transformer out because he needed it for something else.. Soo.. Where could I get a transformer made for this? or is it to old? Diagrams for this amp?

and then also, i have about 10 of these

are they worth anything? they any good?

Royal was a Japanese company, they made effects/amps in the 60's/70's, you will prob find it is a hybrid Fender knock off, if you trace it out it will prob be close to a Twin Reverb. RE transformer, just trace out the circuit and see, I have a strong hunch it is Twin knock off, in which case you just get a replacement Twin OT and PT, Karel can wind them, or import them from a various sources.

Seem the Reverb trano is still there, so you got that going. It is a 6L6 amp I'm sure, and so you can use those EL34's in there for a more Marshall/Fender hybrid tone.

I also clocked it as a Twin knockoff.
Anyone else notice it has a normal and a "Revberb" channel? LOL!

Teonex were an importer's brand - and could be anything from AEG to Chinese cheapies.

Nice find! Find the specs of the transformer required and I can possibly get you a price for a new/rewind one ?

The look of the amp remind me of ELK brand from Japan. Matsushita used to make these, and the tubes were very high quality.

My experience with ELK amps has been that they are meant to be played clean. When you drive them hard, the sound is terrible and they self destruct. Think underspecced Fender. I also used to replace all the capacitors to get them to sound decent. All my first amps were built on ELK chassis ?

So if you want to sound like EVH, you might have to rebuild the amp completely :'(

According to the following site: http://www.drtube.com/guitamp.htm the amp was made by the same company manufacturing Elk amps (Miyuki Ind. Co.).

Just go to the elk section of the webpage and there is more info on the company and some schematics for the elk amps. However there isnt more on the Royal.

Looks like it could be a fun project though ?

If it was me i would strip the chassis right down and build a new amp from scratch as Karel mentioned.

The problem is that I'm seldom home, I live about an hour away from home and am usually extremely busy. I also have no space in my apartment to do amp projects. So, my best bet is getting parts and either asking my dad to fit them or to fit them when I'm home next, which may be awhile.. ☹

All that being said, I will probably try and get a transformer for the royal and see what it sounds like... if nothing else, i only lose a couple hundred bucks trying to get it to work!

The Royal has reverb, this amp has vibrato. The Royal has three more (that I can see) controls. So they may be similar but they're not the same.

Looking at the fender amp field guide, from the control knobs, you'd probably find that the amp is more closely related to a late 60's twin reverb. So maybe a late blackface or more likely an early silverface model (without the master volume control).

Its quite funny though cause your amp is a "revberb" amp and not a reverb amp...they couldn't quite nail the spelling there ?

Instead of spending a couple hundred bucks on a tranny...maybe try find a tech that can just pop one in and test it to see what the tone may be like. If it sounds horrid, you dont want to spend money on it. Unless you prepared to do a full rebuild...

You don't know of any tech's that I could take it to?

I dont know of any amp techs in dbn...but im sure coastal music or glenwood music could probably point you in the direction of one. I do all my amp work myself as Im a qualified electronic eng. Unfortunately I dont have a transformer to stick in there, otherwise I'd offer ?
