As I understand it, the majority of Japanese-made Fenders are basswood?
Not at all. I don't have the details at my fingertips, but only a minority (I think the MIJ Standard Strat for e.g.) are basswood. They make Fenders in basswood, alder, and ash. The vintage reissues are, I think, all alder and ash.
**update**
Here's a pretty random list I've compiled:
Yep. MIJ Standard Strat is basswood.
'54 is two-piece ash
'57 is three-piece alder, or basswood
'58 3 tone sunburst is basswood
'62s are alder or basswood
'68 Hendrix-Woodstock type is alder
Ok. So there are a lot of basswood guitars. But also alder and ash. Do your research before buying. But that goes for any gear.
And who cares about the bullet strats ?
