Just for clarity I would place my TS9 before the Multi-Effects Processor.
Because I only use my TS9 on my physical amps preamp. This way I can stomp it on or off depending if I'm using a preamp from the Multi-FX.
Would this be the correct way of doing it?
I'm going to need allot more cables made up! MATTA!!!!!!!

Going to use the 4 Cable method later 2night.
Will post clips with my findings. - Stay tuned.

Hi Shaun.
Thanks for the great thread. I've owned a GT-6 for a few years now. I don't, and have never used, a physical guitar amp [horror ☹]. Just the GT-6 into a mixer connected to a power-amp in my live rig. I also only use three patches a buddy programmed for me -a basic clean, one overdrive and one distortion.
I'm now at the point where I need to figure out how to make some better patches, and this thread has helped me understand some basics.
Question: am I right in assuming the 4-cable method adds little value to my kind of set-up (straight into the PA). I should probably spend more time finding the right pre-amp sim to make up for the lack of a physical amp, right?

Hey Riaan
Yea, sound like you need to fiddle around with the differ "PRE" - amp simulators.
I found the MS-HiGain / SLDN / JCM120 to be the most useful pre-amps.
Also try modify your OUTPUT/ and SPEAKER options.
Usually the Speaker is set to "Type Original" which sounds very thin/ nasely.
Try the 4x12 / 2x12 / Custom2, Custom3 Settings.
I don't know if the GT6 has these options but I'm pretty sure they have some of them (the PREAMPS and a few Speaker Emulation settings)
I'm sure if you set all your E.Q on your P.A/ Mixer to 12 o clock / 0, and control the E.Q from the GT8 you would be able to get some cool tones.
AlanRatcliffe
Yeah - you need to fiddle a bit with the preamp and speaker settings. Make sure the speaker sims are set to all "mic" and no "direct" (I think that's the terminology they used in the GT-6). Start some new patches with just the amp and speakers and tweak until you are happy. You can then use those basic amp patches as templates and do a "save as" every time you want to write a new patch.
No need to use the four cable method - just guitar in and one or two cables out direct to PA.

? Just shows you how we are all different - I found I got the most mileage from the Matchdrive for crunchy to distorted sounds, and the Blackface (IIRC - The Fender amp sim) for cleans. Occasionally the JC-120 for Andy Summers type clean tones.

Wow shaun, greatly written imo and I really didn't know there was sooo much to multi fx processors ? This seriously has got me keen to buy a multi fx proc. Gonna force feed this down my buddies throat, he owns a GT6 i think. I highly doubt he knows even a 1/5 of what you have posted, gonna be fun next time I'm at him fiddling with all the effects properly ?

Up till now I've also just plugged my GT-8 straight into my amp's input. Some of the patches sound decent, others terrible. I only have 3 cables at the moment, but will go get some more tomorrow.
I really like the 5150 lead patch, when I use the neck pickups on both my Ibanez and Cort. It's so smooth sounding. I'm currently attempting Neil Zaza's "I'm Alive" and I really like how it sounds on that setting.

@ Andrew & Alan:
Thanks for the advice! I'll try all of those today. I've set aside some tweaking time, as it's terrible if one just gets into a rut using the same stuff all the time. My overdrive patch is fine, but the other two are average. Now I actually know what to look for. I was unaware the MFX was essentially divided into two components - amp/speaker/mic vs stomp-box type FX.
My choice to go without a physical amp has been one of convenience and portability, as I move our entire PA in the back of a Citi Golf! But having read all of this I'm starting to GAS for a proper amp to use at least at home for enjoyment. I think it was Gearhead who said earlier I'm only playing with 'half the instrument'! ?
Gearhead
Yeah annoyingly he tries to make that point whenever possible. I would encourage you to take your time and buy something cooool second hand :goodtimes:

Now that you mention it... I was using the MatchDrive the other day... and It actually sounded
really good through my Laney. Mite have to go re-program all my overdrive patches.

Hi
Should I use the 4 cable method with Line6 M9? Or is it better to via the input of the amp? (the M9 has amp/pre amp simulators, its just effects?
thanx

I don't even think you could, it does not seem to be fitted with an effects loop ?
You might have an effects loop in your amp, if you do you can try putting it in there (3 cable method) or in front of the amp (2 cables). If you tend to use the amps drive and/or the pedal compression, use 2 cable method. But trying and choosing is always the best answer. It's
your tone...

No worries, multifx were "Actually" designed to be used like that. Thank goodness people like Shaunf are shedding some light.

I tinkered with some tones over the weekend, and I think I'm getting there. Alan and AJB's suggestions were spot on. ?

Nice post Shaun and all.
Strange I could not fall a sleep last night so I plugged in my VAMP2 ( which I bought when they came out ..but never really got to know) but instead of plugging into the AUX of the amp I plugged in my headphones and JEEEEEPERS ? !!!!
what a difference that made, so I started paging though that "white book looking" thing that no one seems to read. and ALAKAZAM it all became clear as day..... seems I skipped everything between the covers. Just the difference between Studio 1 -3 to Live 1-3 is immense
Agreed the VAMP2 is not as advanced as the GT's, but it has a lot going for it/me. I found that playing with the CABs, AMP's, EQing, Drive, Reverb and a small amount of effects, one can get a pretty damn good own sound going.... In any case who wants to sound like SRV, I can safley say he does not want to sound like me .
The combinations are endless, which is often THE problem.... for me Less is more - but I am no expert. but I can say that I will be getting to know this device a lot better , So another lesson learnt . RTFM (read the Frigging Manual) !!!!

Attila, I started reading the GT-10 manual last night. After 2 hours I realized that I will need another 2 month to go everything ?
Like you I also hate reading manuals, but I'm forcing myself to read this one!!!
RTFM (read the Frigging Manual)
Did you make a typo? In IT we use a different word :-[

For all the GT owners if you download the GT editor you can make your own patches, save them as a .syx file and share them.
AFAIK the GT10 has USB connectivity but with the GT8 you need a MIDI interface. I bought the Midisport UNO USB to MIDI connector and it is awesome.
There's just nobody to share patches with... :-\

I just got my GT10, spent the last 2 hours going through the first 40 banks.
There is just too much to take in! I will setup my software this weekend and start messing around.
Will send you some PM when I get some stuff made up ?

I found a web site with some insane patches!!!
The one that stands out is a Metallica patch. If you like the black album, well all I can say is that it is 100% spot on!
Will post it tomorrow.
Back to the topic:
I think running the GT-10 into the effects loop to bypass the Marshall's preamp is a bad idea.
Either I'm a moron or it just sucks! The tone sounded crappy and empty. It was almost as if the power valves decided, screw you for doing this to me!
The GT-10 into earphones sounds amazing, and I'm sure through monitors it will rock.
So the GT-10 into the effects loop for chorus, delay etc. sound great (the reason I got it in the first place)!

I agree 100%. It tone sounded very lifeless. I preferred the tone I got from plugging it guitar into pedal into amp.
