arjunmenon I've recently been listening to this guy, and IMO, he is very tasteful and yet can tear it up at will. Watch the video and please vote. Thanks. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GJGDAlUXM-w (old forum) Poll Results: Did you like the below video? Yes: 6 No: 0
evolucian He looks chunky there... shame. My instructional musta been when he was working daily. Yeah, this dude is one of the better players I have come across. Do yourself a favour and get his "Solo Guitar Improvisations"... its fantastic... all acoustic until the last track (but the electric only comes in for ambience so it doesn't count). "Sunny afternoon" which is track two of the album fascinates me everytime i put it on. If I could do that on my ace I'd be so happy I could die in peace with a "just got laid" smile. This guy rips through jazz and blues into country and funk and rock and straight into solo jazz throughout all his albums. I have seven of his albums and as a guitarist, I'd recommend all of them. But only if you like smooth playing. His instructional is about intervallic lines... the book is awesome, and the dvd is great as a "Oh... thats how he did it and thats the idea behind it" kinda thing.
Squonk I also have "Solo Guitar Improvisations"! 'Sunny Afternoon' is an awesome display of Bass, rhythm and melody all at the same time. I also have a live DVD 'Live in LA" which is mostly Blues. I would even take a chance to be flamed and say that I prefer him to Eric Johnson, mabe not his tone, we all know that Eric is the Tone Ranger, but I think his phrasing and smooth touch and his ability to swop through Jazz, Country, blues and rock etc puts him ahead of Eric. If Eric had more balls he would be Carl Verheyen! ? Not that it's fair to compare the two, but I think they are very similar. Good stuff Arjun
PeteM Arjun Menon wrote Thanks for the tips guys. Will try to get my grubby paws on the Solo Guitar Improv DVD. ? He's great. This DVD sounds excellent - must find one.
arjunmenon evolucian wrote I dont know if there is a "solo guitar improv" dvd... Mea Culpa. I meant the Solo Guitar Improvisations DVD
arjunmenon evolucian wrote once again I'll say I don't think there is one Aah, i assumed that the "Solo Guitar Improvisations" in your post was in reference to a DVD of the same name. Is it a CD?
Squonk What Evo's is saying is that "Solo Guitar Improvisations" is a cd and not a DVD. It's audio! Well worth getting, he explains in notes on the sleeve, that when he got his guitar, his dad came into the room and asked him "What can you play?". Carl got excited and played him the opening riff to "Satisfaction" and the another opening riff to a popular song at the time. His Dad said in response "What's this, I thought you could play a whole song!" This got Carl going down the road of playing the whole song including the bass, rhythm and melody at the same time. You have to listen to his "Sunny Afternoon" The live DVD that I have is "Alive in LA" which is basically a trio with Carl doing mostly tasty blues on various Strats. Worth getting as well
