Quite seriously, there's no rule that says you HAVE to use a plectrum. Jeff Beck doesn't.
You can play with fingers, with flat pick, with thumb pick and fingers (Chet Atkins), with flat pick and fingers (Danny Gatton, Richard Thompson, half of Nashville). All of these have their pros and cons. None of them cover all the possibilities.
Playing with fingers only means you don't have to worry about where's the pick, what kind of pick, what if I drop the pick or why do picks cost so darn much.
