Troubleshooting - Unstable G string
Hello all
Can some one please help. I have bought a Vintage V100 Tabacooburst and have done a setup by myself. Plays fine. Problem is. When bending on the G string it goes out of tune. This does not happen on any of the other strings, just the G. What should I look at to fix this. My guess is it may be the nut, but I am not sure. Any ideas ?

My guess would be that the string might be getting stuck at the nut when you release the bend.
If it's not the nut, i dunno, maybe there's some amount of slack at the tuning post maybe.

Probably the nut. Try some graphite powder in the slot (use a pencil if all else fails), see if that helps...

I also suspect that it is the nut
Will try the pencil fix when I get home

Check that you have enough string windings around the tuner post. You can even try locking the string on itself when you restring it again. But yeh, the nut is likely the problem. Do you hear a ping sound when tuning the g-string, or perhaps when bending? That's a tell tale sign of the string binding in the nut.

No no ping sound

But heres a piece of weirdness for you
Get home on Friday, and strat playing ....... do the bends and lo and behold the bloomin thing stays in tune
Been using the whole weekend and never went out ou tune after that
Go figure

How long ago did you change strings on it (if at all) before you started having this problem? Maybe it was just settling around the post?

+1. Do you stretch your strings in when you fit a new set?

Did stretch, always do before any exercise ?
Ant the strings have been on for almost a week and a half now
I still do belive that it may be a nut issue, as when tuning its a bi terratic as well

Then the only thing for it is to check what happens next time you change strings! ?

Got exactly the same problem, same string... an issue across string changes but not windings or nut and doesn't always present. Drives me insane insANE INSANE! Pretty sure its the machine head... somehow.

Probably. Uneven wear on the worm gear can make it slip in certain places and not in others.

Note that with tuning problems if it's a tuner, the string will only go flat. If it goes sharp or flat it's the nut, string tree (if the guitar has one) or windings.

Yep, it's only going flat... the folks at Thundercloud Music (you'll know it if you know Sun Valley ? ) suggested tightening the tension screw on the tuner peg... which only made it stiffer to turn but did not help at all (not that I thought it would).
I think I'm going to swap out all the machines anyway.
