I agree, but only because they smash perfectly good expensive guitars >☹

I still would love to do that one day, but with a very cheap messed up guitar :?

My son saw a guy smash his bass at Mercury Live, which he said spoilt his evening. I was sound engineering VOD (1990-91) and Greg smashed his guitar down because it was giving problems, the vocalist misread the situation and continued to smash the guitar into pieces which he threw into the audience.

I have always liked the Who ever since My Generation way back. Infact we recorded The kids are alright in '69 and played many of their early stuff.....However I as a young guy at the time despised Pete Townsend's guitar smashing and mutilation of (sometimes dummy) Marshall stacks.(And I did not care a hoot for the symbolism? behind it). It simply does not send out a good message, but rather screams "come to our concerts (Tom, Dick and Harry) and WATCH us smashing equipment !" and many people went to see them for that very reason. ☹ Watching that guy do that evokes in me the same emotions as seeing a horrific accident !

Pete was doing that before he had made mega bucks.

Legend has it that in the early days he would "take a guitar on appro" and then smash it and never walk into that shop again. Word got around and every music shop in England said "thanks, but no thanks" to Pete.

Yeah, just seems wrong on so many levels

I do however have a question. Are there any guitarists doing this sort of thing these days? I don't think anyone who is "mainstream" is doing it otherwise...well even I would know about it ? Is there anyone, er, "middle" or "low" stream that you know about?

MY old guitar teacher managed to rescue a late 90's Les Paul that someone smashed on stage. He ended up buying the parts for a few hundred bucks and restored the entire guitar to it's former glory. It looked like new apart from the lines where the body shattered.

And these charities the reassembled guitars are going to... Are they just for over-18s? What do they do with them at the charities - smash them there and send them back to the company? So many questions!

If ever there was a legend then this is it imho.......just imagine someone (who is not nearly famous) doing that (especially on more than one occasion) would either be certified outright and sent to you-know-where or get chucked into jail. I mean it's not like stealing the odd banana at a Porra shop... ?

Nothing is quite as embarrassing as standing centre stage, whacking your guitar up and down to no avail.
