shadow1 OK maybe a cheezy question but being the tone freak I am, I thought I would pass this by other tone freaks ? I want to get a new scratchplate for my fender strat, just to change the colour. I want to get a tortoise shell / black not sure yet. I called around and the going rate is about R500 for a genuine fender and R200 for a mightymight "knockoff" Now to me it seems CRAZY to buy the fender one, afterall its just a piece of plastic (that comment might get me shot ?) Do you guys think the cheaper option will effect the tone negatively???? thanks
MikeM The plastic alamgamate actually transfers vibrations (tone) from the pup covers through the pickguard and into the wood and this creates an almost acoustic effect on the strat, which is why so many guys play strats. Actually no, no difference but the holes might not line up (On either..)
Gearhead -1 on the amalamagl (what?) ??? ? +1 on the holes, don't understand why they can't get this right. It's as if Fender did not have a drilling jig (which I'm sure they did) or changed the jig sometime during the sixties (for which there can not be enough of a reason, ever) >☹
AlanRatcliffe Mighty Mite are fine for pickguards. TTS is the most widely variant of colours from manufacturer to manufacturer though - some are more red while others are more brown and the patterns vary quite a bit. So usually best to actually see an example before buying (but not crucial). The best looking TTS IMO is the real celluloid, but that is highly flammable, shrinks after a decade or two and is prone to warping, while the modern acrylic TTS guards are OK. While pickguards have a small effect on tone (how much depends on how microphonic the pickups are), you'll only really notice a tonal difference if you change to an all-wood or a metal guard (especially aluminium!). It's not really noticeable from one manufacturer of plastic to another.
shadow1 THanks Alan that sums it up nicely ? @ MikeM - that amalgamation theory is actually pretty damn funny! ? i almost beleived it too...
