What is the general consensus on havign WIves and Girlfriends (or Husbands and Boyfirends) , better halves if you like, at practices or recording sessions?

I think it depends on the level of support you generally receive from them. If they support what you are doing, then (as I have experienced in the past) it can be great! Also a factor to keep in consideration is how well they get on with the rest of the band members better halves.
Myself, I have really enjoyed having my wife at practices etc, but have also seen from previous band members who were not so lucky, it can turn out to be quite a situation.
My experiences where good though....!!!

When I practice, my wife is playing the other guitar in the duet so I never have to think about this.
I think it is good & healthy to have your better half be there & share this passion with you but can be a problem if they all start to fight. This is why you have a tazer and pepper spray at every practice.

No-one but the band. It's the law. ?
You and your bandmates might be happy to allow it in practice (although I don't recommend it there either), but in studio, you're in someone else's domain, and it's disrespectful to them and guaranteed to make their life more difficult. You're there for work - anyone else is there for social reasons. In my experience, people and can't help but interfere in any number of ways from chattering and generally making a noise, through offering "helpful suggestions" to just plain being in the way.

Yeah, my wife is also in the band, it has it's advantages and disadvantages. I think in bands where WAG's are not involved, it's probably less complicated, for instance, if there is friction at a particular practice, when everyone disperses, you get a break. However, if you happen to go home with one of the band members, well, it might follow you ? But I must add, fortunately this rarely happens with us.
But I suppose the question is more for WAG's that just hang around at the practice. As far as the other WAG's are concerned, they pretty much are not involved, or at least, were not involved...our lead vocalist this week informed us that he is leaving the band, and well...I suspect there was some influence, enough said, this could get me into trouble :-\

Yoko Ono. The prosecution rests your Honor... ?

I agree with Alan. Band only. The definition of "band" can be expanded to include management and technical staff.

Well, George Harrison took his wife Patti to band practice while they were rehearsing with Eric Clapton..........the rest as they say.........is history.......
(hahahahaha........sorry, could'nt resist that one)........

I don't know about you Riaan, but for me groupies are a strictly hypothetical problem.

Me too but then I started leaving myself messages with heavy breathing and writing myself notes with newspaper clippings. Now I feel as wanted as MR Timberlake. It works. ?

my gf stays at home and lets us have our privacy during practices, actually its just the band that can fit into our pratice space. during shows its a bit of a different story, my gf always comes with and she is sort of our photographer but she's awsome and supports the band, we rarely have arguments but our singer had fights every show we played with his better half, guess i'm just lucky.
during recording sessions i think gf's should be left at home and not interfere with the production.

I reckon it depends upon whether you are treating music-playing as a hobby or a business venture. If it's the latter, I don't think many of us would take our wives/husbands to work and ask them to sit quietly in the corner while we attend a board meeting, weld a rebar or balance someones books.

Especially no groupies. Imagine if you will, trying to get some work done with Cynthia Pastercaster around. It's not the groupies, it's the musos when there are groupies around...

I think thats more the reason than most, its not the way the WAG's behave, its the way the band member behaves when he/she is around.
PeteM, you also hit the nail on the head.

Back in the good old days, when we practiced at my place, my wife would not even make me coffee never mind put in an appearance in the practice room, she said my musician friends looked a bit rough, she should see the forum members at grahamstock, all decent well mannered folk .... but I agree no WAGS
