Great news indeed.
I just canceled my ISP and will be taking MWEB up on their offer!

This is an amazing deal. Has anyone found a catch yet.
Conrad
Yay! Thank goodness...

Maybe a two year contract with a network locked router? But I would also maybe wait a while to see, usually when something like this happens, other ISP are sure to follow.

Hold yer hosses - it's still shaped. Priority given to normal web browsing, email, social networking and online banking, etc. Low priority to video streaming, FTP and of course all the file sharing protocols - basically any high bandwidth application.
I question whether they can actually handle the increased traffic of everyone suddenly having uncapped access. Also, ADSL is, as always, "best service", which means they don't guarantee the advertised throughput speeds if the network is busy, so it's entirely possible that they slow you down to make sure you can't download 500GB a month (or even anywhere close).
It's a step in the right direction, but I think we'll now see a rush of competing packages, some of which may be better suited to specific individuals, cheaper, or let's face it - just not MWeb with their bad service and occasional shady business tactics). Be interesting to see if my ISP, who give me a 30GB soft cap for R1 100 p.m. up their game (or at least lower prices) or not.
BTW, IS has had uncapped access (and even uncapped and unshaped) access for a few years already - at a price though (R1200 without line rental).

Well, I suppose there is alot they dont mention, but like you say Alan, its a step in the right direction.

Seems like good news, but as a natural cynic I also believe "there's no such a thing as a free meal"... I hope we're not gonna be restricted in some way, especially with regards to download speed.
dee
It is definitely a start.
I'm well aware that there will be certain limits such as shaped data and the "best service" principles as mentioned by Alan, but we are being milked dry by the ISP's and telecommunication companies in this country, so this can only be a step in the right direction.
As I'm already with Mweb, this does make not difference to me in terms of speed or price, what it does mean is I can finally download what I need. A lot of the applications I use for work is updated every once in a while, or releases new versions, and these are getting more frequently larger than 1GB, and then there are multiple versions (32bit vs 64bit) as well.
We will have to wait for April and see how it goes...!

I personally won't use MWeb, I'll rather wait for someone else to drop their prices. Step in the right direction maybe, but screw them, had enough crappy dealings with them, not gonna bite this carrot

i'm not so clued up on the mweb service but i have applied for "cheap" uncapped before with Screamer and it was probably the worst experience i have had with an IS to date. these companies are cheap for a reason, cause their service is pathetic. hopefully MWEb wil have better service. as allan mentioned that there are no garentees that you'll be running at 386. with screamer you get average of about 9kbs, max of about 12-14. with telkoms i was getting 39kbs download speed. i am now with afrihost cause they are very cheap with extra cap, at the moment R39/2gb on topups.
i would like to hear some feedback if anyone gets this MWEB service on the download speeds and service they provide please.

Alan, maybe you could benefit from Afrihost's new 50Gb and 100Gb specials. www.afrihost.com
I've been using them since October last year and all I can say is WOW it's fast. Very reliable connection and great service.
As for M-Web, I won't touch them with a 10-foot pole. I have zero faith in their entire business, especially their "policies" with regards to DNS and email.

Ive always had really good service with Mweb.
I got this email from them a few minutes ago:
Now you can do so much more. More of what you have always done. More of what you haven't even tried yet.
Get more entertainment by downloading movies and music, watching as much sport and as many YouTube clips as you like, streaming radio and gaming. Stay in touch with friends and family using email, Facebook, Twitter and by calling them online. Surf, research, Google, get news, update software, bank, book flights, buy books – and as much of it as you like!
"downloading movies and music, watching as much sport and as many YouTube clips as you like" doesnt look like there is a catch, but we will have to wait and see.

I work for the greatest ISP in Africa. (yeah i love the company i work for ) This is def a step in the right direction and with Seacom coming on steam and the new atlantic cable not to far away we are going to see a lot of change in the internet access market both in price and bandwidth. These changes will see the consumer winning in many ways.
However (always a however or but) as Alan points out above in a post, ADSL is best effort service and speed is dependant on how many users are on at the same time etc so its not the be all and end all.

I also use Afrihost and they are great! Best/Cheapest ISP at the moment!

Ther are only 2 sites that I visit every day GFSA and Mybroadband. for a moment there I thought my DNS server had confused the two IP addresses. ?

They do look worth checking out. But I suspect they will have something even better soon, to compete with the M-Web offering. Might be worth hanging on until the dust settles a bit...

The reality is MWEB isn't the first to offer this. My brother, also in South Africa got uncapped 2 months ago for R500 (incl line rental) a month. I think by the end of 2010, nearly everywhere will be uncapped. But like alan said, it will all be shaped.
I will say this, my bro downloaded 70 gigs worth last month, so, even shaped is pretty good. ?
I'm stuck on a 3g contract, but may end up getting adsl on top of it if another provider besides mweb comes out with something.
