I work for the greatest ISP in Africa. (yeah i love the company i work for ) This is def a step in the right direction and with Seacom coming on steam and the new atlantic cable not to far away we are going to see a lot of change in the internet access market both in price and bandwidth. These changes will see the consumer winning in many ways.
However (always a however or but) as Alan points out above in a post, ADSL is best effort service and speed is dependant on how many users are on at the same time etc so its not the be all and end all.

Alan, maybe you could benefit from Afrihost's new 50Gb and 100Gb specials. www.afrihost.com
I also use Afrihost and they are great! Best/Cheapest ISP at the moment!

Ther are only 2 sites that I visit every day GFSA and Mybroadband. for a moment there I thought my DNS server had confused the two IP addresses. ?

I've been using them since October last year and all I can say is WOW it's fast. Very reliable connection and great service.
As for M-Web, I won't touch them with a 10-foot pole. I have zero faith in their entire business, especially their "policies" with regards to DNS and email.
They do look worth checking out. But I suspect they will have something even better soon, to compete with the M-Web offering. Might be worth hanging on until the dust settles a bit...

The reality is MWEB isn't the first to offer this. My brother, also in South Africa got uncapped 2 months ago for R500 (incl line rental) a month. I think by the end of 2010, nearly everywhere will be uncapped. But like alan said, it will all be shaped.
I will say this, my bro downloaded 70 gigs worth last month, so, even shaped is pretty good. ?
I'm stuck on a 3g contract, but may end up getting adsl on top of it if another provider besides mweb comes out with something.

MWEB have a bad habit of manually altering DNS records rather than letting automatic updates from zone files to take place

I'm getting uncapped from Neotel for R500 pm - well not really it's is capped at 5Gig but my download speed is so slow it probably take about 2 months to reach the cap ☹

I see that the highest speed, uncapped and unshaped package from MWeb (a business package) costs over R2K per month...
I'm now downloading an expansion pack for Dimension Pro, nine huge files, and it's bloody awful. Depleted my cap several times yesterday and today, and had to buy topups a couple of times. It would have been cheaper to have the CD's shipped from overseas. Like always, we're being ripped off in this country as far as technology goes. For f >☹ >☹ >☹ sakes, we had to wait 20 years longer than Zim before we got television, all because of one lousy lowlife government telecom official who was opposed to it. Now it's the same with broadband...

Another option is Afrihost. They offer a semi-shaped service for R29 per gig. During business hours the traffic is shaped liked MWEB's but after hours its not. So for line rental plus R29 per gig its a pretty good deal in my opinion.

Another cool thing from Afrihost is that they offer you R14/GB topup option in the middle of every month!

I use Afrihost for my work's webpage, and they're great. Perhaps I should change ISP.

Don't just yet, Afrihost are releasing their uncapped packages some next time week as far as i know.

Thanks, I'll look out for that.

Yep, and for 4Mbps it's somewhere around R500. Works out to about R999 for uncapped 4Mbps ADSL via Afrihost.
It's not 100% uncapped though. If you're downloading torrents and stuff and go over 200Gb, they'll shut you down. Which I think is absolutely fair. You can still go bos on YouTube and uploading and downloading competition entries so all is well ?
I'm very excited about all this bandwidth craziness! It's making the internet a LOT more fun for me!

Indeed Norio, but for someone to smack 200GB in one month you will need at least a 4MB line ?
Now if only Hellkom will give us something to smile about!

My isp (@lantic) is offering me uncapped adsl for R339pm. I'm thinking of switching over since currently I'm payng R343 for 4gig. But max download speeds of 36kb/s still makes me incredibly sad.

Why so slow? You mean kB (kilobyte), not kb (kilobaud)? Still - I've only got a 512K connection and usually get 54KB.

Ya kilobytes... I only have a 384K line.. It would cost me an extra R200pm for a 512K line. So if speeds would only be increased by +-20kb, I couldn't really justify the cost. I still remember the days of dial-up when I maxed out at 3kb/s. So 36kb/s isn't too bad ?
