Hey - I got a sympathy vote - thanks!
Hey giggsy don't you believe that for one minute. Only a bunch of cruel heartless bastards on this forum, you won't ever get any sympathy! ?
I find the challenges an extremely powerful learning tool - it forces one to venture out of your comfort zones, and touch on other styles. And it also teaches me a lot about recording, mostly that I'm still very bad at it... For example, Alan's clip is crystal clear and almost sounds like it's from a commercial CD, mine sounded reasonable up to a point and then I added something that sonically screwed the whole thing up. I always do that, never know when to stop...
Ok, Alan is a qualified sound engineer (amongst other things) so I'm not gonna be too hard on myself! Maybe the guys with the expertise could comment on the recording techniques as well? Would really help us.
