I woke up recently having just discussed song-writing with Leonard Cohen. He was sitting at a table looking all grizzled while I was leaning against a kitchen counter. He said that it's a good idea to start a tune away from the melody. He says if you start on a harmony it's kind of a teaser that builds up the main melody when it arrives on the first verse. I didn't notice at the time that I couldn't find a single example of one of his songs that actually does this. Perhaps he was thinking of hallelujah?
Also he mentioned something about singing the relative sevenths? It all sounded quite reasonable at the time, but now that I think about it, I reckon he's losing it.
Yeah singe... thats the way i've been looking at it for a while now. Very cool to have it in a dream dude. But I think he meant it in terms of not writing a melody to harmony... which is tricky.
Damn... wish I had a songwriting dream like that... instead of all the skanks who appear in mine... bloody groupies.... who needs em.
