Slayer are fantastic.

But my strong hunch is that those cabs are mostly props - probably with the speakers yanked out to make them easier to handle. The only reason to have that many cabs on stage nowdays - or even them days - is for use in a hearing loss experiment. That's why I'd guess that only about four of them are actually pumping sound (straight into the mics and from there into the PA).

I don't get why anyone on earth would use a full stack nowdays. Sure, if they contain different speakers and you want to blend the sounds. And all of that assumes you're playing arena sized venues. Stacks were invented, AFAIK, because of the poor quality, underpowered PAs of the '60s. If you were Pete Townsend, and you wanted to be heard in increasingly loud venues full of screaming kids, you had to pump more sound off the stage. So amps increased in power, and people used more of them.

But today you could fill an arena with a 5W Marshall combo with a shure sm57 stuck in front of it leading to the PA. I'd be very surprised if anyone still runs that much volume on stage. Am I wrong?

I read on Justin Sandercoe's website that some famous names - he does not say who - have huge stacks as props on stage, and hidden behind is a tiny 30W amp, miked and into the PA.
