I thought it might be cool to develop a list of GOOD guitar shops in the durban area. I came to this conclusion after thinking to myself, "I really want to try out some Martins and LARRIVEE's." Then I realised, I have no idea where I could do that in Durban. Is there anywhere that stocks such instruments?
I know of Coastal music in Umhlanga, but I have only ever seen a Taylor there, other than Ibanez.
Then there is Music Inc in Lalucia mall, however, they stock mostly Yamaha.
Have I missed a private room where they keep other acoustics? Or have I possibly missed the gold mine in music stores.
Durbanites, help me out! ?
Dillon
Unfortunately there's not much in Durban to get excited about. I reckon your best bet is Coastal Music and Glenwood Village Music. The best acoustic I've seen in actually in stock, was a Taylor 310ce. Of course they all say they can order whatever you want, but that's not the point...

Sigh, I was afraid of such an answer. Why can't we have HUGE guitar stores like USA. Man, that'd rock! ?

Time to set up GFSA Guitar Tours up here in Joeys. We could spend a good Saturday without traveling too far, in which you could look at Larrivee, Martin, Breedlove, PRS, Schechter, Lakland basses... that's OTOMH, there may be more. Lunch at a good restaurant with fine micro-brewery beer...
I'll call it "the GAS Weekend". It could be the start of a something big...

Bob, I'd so be keen for something like that.. I'd pay the petrol, if you could drive? What a Saturday that'd be.. ? Fly in to Joeys in the morning and out in the evening, sounds awesome! ?

I don't know if I'm getting confused here but what about the music shop in umhlanga rocks drive? Theres plenty of nice guitars there. Go to glenwood village music at the Glenwood market. Some nice stuff there too. Theres a coastal music in Riverside road by the Blue Lagoon aswell.

There are 26 or so music shops in the Durban area.
they all stock the same junk.
We need a rep or 2 for good guitars down here. hmmm, I'm not making any bucks, who do I need to speak to in JHB to get some guitars down here?
guitarboy2828
I'm with you Don.. I'm pretty keen to make that happen too. Do you think the reason for high end guitars not being in durban is that the market doesn't need it?
Every guitar shop has cheap stuff, some have intermediate stuff.. Is that because that is the only market in durban?

Hit the nail on the head. The market just isn't big enough to support high end guitars.
A GAS trip to Jo-burg is definitely on the cards for me sometime soon!

I would think it's the other way round. Some shop in Durban needs to decide to get a couple of Larrivees or Breedloves or whatever and contact the distributor.

IYO what's the best music store in Durban, and please can you give me their contact details...I might have their details already, but just in case I don't.
It's time to wake Durban up. ?

Thanks, guitarboy.

I think the problem in Durbs is that most of the shops are either owned by or are franchises of chains. Stock is therefore dictated by these chains. I don't know of any independent music stores in Durbs who might carry the more 'exotic' brands. It would be interesting to know whether Larrivee, Martin, Breedlove, Schechter, Lakland basses etc. are available in Cape Town as well.
Volumes dictate I suppose.

I think you are right Pete, Coastal Music is TOMS, Glenwood Village is Bothners. Then we have the Thekwini, Pavilion and Gateway stores being one franchise.
Everyone tries to cater for the low cost market. so there are a LOT of really cheap products out.
guitarboy2828
I never knew that Coastals was apart of TOMS. That is interesting. So, maybe there are little shops that have nice guitars, none of us know about them though? I do know there is a guy, in berea i think, that is a luthier and he has some custom built guitars. Well, he was there 3 years ago when I lived close by there. Some awesome guitars, but nothing cheaper than R30 000, because he would fly to the USA to buy the wood and come back and build the guitar!
I'm thinking that guys like him may stock breedloves and all those fun brands. Maybe we should start doing some research durbanites? ?

Nobody mentioned Marshall Music in Hillcrest.

There's a reason for that! ?
Haha, completely joking. I have only been there once, when I went there, they didn't have anything "wow", they had one taylor.

I heard that Marshall Music in Hillcrest closed down, i may be wrong, but thats what came via the grapevine ?
