Well, I;m really enjoying the Morgan and I really think it was a steal at the price!
The guitars is crystal clear with tops that ring out like a chiming bell and yet surprisingly good bass as well. The D-35 sounds a little "muddy" compared to the Morgan but responds to strumming better in my ear while the Morgan is definately a fingerpickers delight and I could actually see it being surprisingly good at flatpicking as well with a little adaptation by the player.
As you'd expect. OMs are supposed to be fingerpicker's guitars, Dreadnoughts are supposed to suit flatpickers. But good guitars turn out to be very versatile.
What drew me to the Morgan was the chiming that you mention and the separation between the strings. Plus - though it's not an exclusively Morgan thing - the extra bit of width at the nut.
The Morgan also has a longer scale than your D-35, thus a little more tension in the strings.
Is there any way of knowing exactly which yer mine was built?
Mail the factory with the serial number. It's on the inside of the guitar on the block at the end of the neck.
Yours is a 12xx number. Mine is 1017. AFAIK they do about 200 guitars a year, so I'm guessing yours is about a year younger than mine.
Hey... how about a couple of photos?
