Ok, was a small glitch on first choice so have to look again, so I am now deciding between:

1) 1995 Martin D-35:

2) New Martin HD-28 Custom with Adirondack Top, bone nut and saddle and "forward shufted scalloped braces" (but double the price!)

Well, that's a clear choice, ain't it? D35 second hand beats HD28 new any day (even if it's yesterday) ?
The only thing that could make you decide otherwise is playing them and feeling that the one is THE ONE. For now at least ☹

Interesting that you should say that - the Martin guys on other forums say exactly the opposite ??? :-\

Why do they guess the Adirondack should be so much better? I look at it from a future GAS perspective: the D35 is going to fetch the same price if played enough, whereas the HD28 is going to drop quite a bit regardless. I have not known any guitarist ever to stick with any guitar for the rest of their lives. Anyone have?

Yip, you're right. Although the HD-28 has that edge the D-35 has the warmth of 15 years playing in the grain. AND it leaves a bit over for more GAS later ?

As a Martin HD owner (HD28VS) I can confirm that the HD's are superb guitars and deserve the reputation they have. But it must be noted the HD28 usually so warmly recommended is a Sitka topped guitar rather than the Adi top your (potential) one has, (Hugh Cumming likes his Adi tops, I presume these are from him), which may not be to everyone's taste should the day come where you wish to sell. Had the guitar been the standard HD28 with the sitka top, the prices would have been closer and I would be recommending the HD28 unreservedly. Now my thinking is that the D35 may be the best choice. Note though that if the price difference between the two is not really an issue with you and the HD really speaks to you, then that is the guitar for you.

+1. Me & the Sanox over 20 years now. I can see my homebuilt Strat staying around for the same...

@ Rac. The D-35 would seem to be the choice. Esepcially if it has been played in, it should be sounding pretty good.

With the change you could beef up your accoustic FX or DI box or Amp etc, could even afford the spongebob guitar ?

Or get a good pickup system installed.

IIRC Racman, your plan involved an electro-acoustic, and you have given your Crafter to your son. So if you want an EA you could go the route of finding a guitar you like and then getting electronics added. You don't have to shop specifically for an electro-acoustic. You have the option of getting the acoustic and adding the electro.

Ok, I currently use a LR Baggs Para DI but would welcome suggestions on FX units, amps etc or even alternatives to the LR Baggs which I find pretty good though, for Acoustic.

The D-35 has a Baggs UST in already but will check out the sound this week as my mind is made up about rather getting the D-35. The crafter is not really something that I see replacing an electro acoustic but is more based on the T5 model and I am also undecided about that as well now. To make matters worse I am now being offered an early 30's National Resonator in exchgange for my Strat and Tele :?

Man, I'm going to need a therapist soon ?

Ok, so collected my D-35 today and just love it! A few scratches but generally in great condition for a 15 year old guitar and great tone as well. Nothing fancy to look at but I just love the sound!

Thought my Takamine Supernatural EAN15CE (Glen Frey model) was warm and very sweet sounding due to the cedar top. Played the Takamine first and thought the Martin could not be much better.... boy was I wrong! The D-35 sounded huge with excellent projection and after playing it, went back to the Tak which now sounded flat and "thin".

Will still be keeping the Tak as it is an excellent working guitar as well,

Congrats man. Always better to buy an acoustic with a few years on it so you don't have to be the one waiting for the tone to appear. Enjoy it. Post more pics.

Also collected a great condition Morgan OM Rosewood this morning from Andys - thx X-Bob for the "heads up" on this one (I owe you big time - great meeting you)

So have now just acquired two great guitars at bargain prices IMO - I are very happy now ?!!!

Also met and chatted to some great people in the process as well.
