Which iPod?

Hi all,

Anybody got any opinions on the pros and cons of the various iPod variants (nano, shuffle etc).

Useful attributes in this case would be
1) Ease of use (intuitive interface)
2) Ease of transfer from PC to iPod
3) Ease of onnection to accessories

They all easy to use ? plug in and it does the rest. itunes sorts it all for you!

I have a Ipod Video 30gb, and a 64gb Ipod Touch

The Touch takes the cake... Its like a mini PC, wireless internet, emails, great screen for videos, surfs youtube like a machine, got the works...
Otherwise between the nano and the video, only difference really is size, and size of disk space...

shuffle is a waste of money...

I have the classic with 120gb hard drive space. So you could load up your whole CD collection and still have space for more.

Ha! I note that all the e-tailers running "specials" are offering exactly the same price.

Even if I buy from Amazon I will save less than 50 bucks after shipping.

Did anybody say anything about price fixing?

Apple have fixed this price to maintain the price all over the world.

Best deals is in duty free ...about 1500 za ront on the new nano 8gb.

Ipod 64gb touch is almost R6000 in SA?

It's half that on every other country on earth?

I bought 2 16gb Nanos from Singapore a month back (via a friend) and they where delivered @ half the price they cost here... R1280 compared to the R2500 here?

Price fixing? If anyone is fixing prices it is the SA retailers IMO

Well, if, by some chance, your cellphone contract is almost up... Get an iPhone!!! Its the iPod touch with phone goodies... But it kicks ass, I have one.

Don't know what your needs are, above listening to music, but if you're looking for a great sounding player thats easy to use and handles ALL digital music formats, then I'd go for a SanDisk Sansa Fuze. You don't need iTunes as a middle man, it's drag & drop like a flash disk. They come with 8gb space, but is expandable via a mini SD card slot. A lot cheaper than an iPod and superior sound quality, IMHO. A big plus for me also is the radio. It's used exclusively for cricket commentary when at work hehe.

That's a bold statement? ?

I thought that most of the sound quality would come from a decent headset? not the player surely? 320kbps is 320 kbps on any disk player?

I have to admit, ipod headphones are k@k and give my ears cramps... ?

new iPod Touch has better in-ears (I'm sure the newer ones all have the same), but I replaced all with a decent sent of Senheiser HD head phones.
It's not a DCS Scarlatti with Vivid Audio G1's but I think its great quality ?

I have come to this conclusion by A/B'ing the Sansa Fuze and iPod Touch, using the same headphones (Sennheiser PX 100's) and the same MP3's.

The Fuze also plays lossless formats like FLAC, if you're into that kinda thing ?
Maybe iPod's do that by now also?

But a CD can change in quality too. A local produced CD is not going to sound as good as a import audiophile specific CD.... in ANY CD player..

I get what you saying... Okay Ipods cannot play FLACs but @ 50mb a song I'd need a 300GB Ipod at the moment ain't happening ?

With CD players, Mp3 players etc there is a need to convert from a digital storage format to analog output, so the digital-to-analog-converter (DAC) must have an influence on the output quality. DACs could be implemented in hardware or software.

The 'new' Nano with its silly small-screen-video stuff is a lot more expensive than the 'old' Nano without it used to be. Of all the iPods I would get a Nano second hand, should be able to pick one up for R300 I reckon.

For some (dunno which) iPods there are upgrades on the market, it usually comes down to the output caps and timing chip. Contrary to popular belief, timing is what lacks in most DACs, not linearity.

I bought a safeway mp3 player in the cape , very good price , awesome sound quality through phillips headphone . And acts like a usb memory stick . also the sound quality on the blackberry is amazing , and the blackberry will out run the iphone in a second.

I recently got a 160Gb iPod Classic which I'm very happy with, except for one thing: it could be a bit louder. Seriously, and I'm not that deaf! This one replaced a 80Gb iPod Classic I had for some years - it broke when it fell one day. The new one's volume is noticably lower. I have a set of Westone UM2 in ear earphones which has great sound though so the lower volume is not a problem, just something I noticed.

For me, capacity is more important than other functions such as offered by the iPhone and in this respect 160Gb is great: 10 000 songs uses only half the memory. And iTunes is great.

But ya, maybe there is some sense in looking at other brands. I got a Nano from Esquire (about 1.6 G's) in december and a colleague walks in the other day with a little esquire house name thing he bought for the Argus and got it for 450-00. sounds pretty much the same to me.

Depends on your firmware. EU MP3 players are normally set to output lower volume than USA players. My MP3 player was also too soft for my liking in the beginning, until I changed to USA firmware.
