Do you want to play the guitar or invest in one? You won't make huge investment gains in buying at that price range (unless it's a pre-CBS Fender bought from an ignorant seller).
If you're after a player & keeper, there's nothing wrong with reasonable or sensible mods and play wear. If you're after a jazz & blues sound, then why not consider a semi-hollowbody? They fit the bill perfectly. In the 10 grand bracket you could be looking at a clean Epiphone 335 or Sheraton or some of the Ibanez Artcore series for around 4500 - 6000 (and still get a fair amp), or one of Lance's Tokai 335s (which look very good indeed).
