My buddy was using one of those giant Boss multi-fx things. Then he flogged it and went on a stomp-box hunt of note - resulting in a magical sprawling city of electronic goodness at his feet. Now he's decided to do the band completely differently - a far less "big rock" kind of sound. So now he's talking about just using the amp crunch channel and his tube-screamer for a bit of extra boost. I said, "you can drop off the other pedals anytime. Just be sure to give them a wipe-down first."
"Suuuuuuuuuree...." he says ?
I'd say, if you can afford to keep your old boxes, then keep them. Don't find yourself wanting to re-buy things. The great thing about analogue effects is that they retain a certain amount of value, while digital tends towards zero value over a few years as new stuff comes out. Whatever you do, don't sell the rat, the muff, or the carbon copy. You'll kick yourself one day if you do.
For me it's not so much a case of wanting to replace all the time, but rather that I keep thinking of new things that would be super useful. I just wanted an amp, good reverb, a tube-screamer, and tremolo for my main rig. Then I realised I needed an analogue delay pedal, then the need for a little amp simulator so that I don't have to haul the bassman 10 to practises, now I'm wondering how much I need a Dyna-Comp. So I get the nasty impression that once I have all the stuff on my list, I'm going to realise that there's one more thing I need (hmmm... actually, a stomp strobe tuner like the crazy one Reinhard's got). And on, and on, and on.
The multi-fx guys lose money in the long term, and they don't get the fun factor of the stomp-boxes. But it does all seem a lot easier.
@Vic - This is too serious a case. I suspect the subject is incurable.
