Vintage gear....relatively cheap in SA ?

I have been pageing through Gumtree and other local sites for some time now looking at the many vintage amps and guitars available.
To me the prices of these are really cheap compared to overseas prices AND ESPECIALLY compared to local store prices for new stuff. For example, a '60's Vox Piggyback Bass amp for R3000 (that's sold now), a '68/69 Fender Bassman and cab with original speakers for around R7000, several original Gibson archtops for around R25000, a '60's Fender Strat for around R25000...the list goes on.
Personally I think there are plenty bargains out there which are excellent value for money.
I mean we pay near R20000 or more today for a new decent valve amp...? ☹

true, there are some great deals out here, but I still look everyday at eba in the USA...... oh man its a sweet sweet thing that. When I move over there next year, I am getting me a blues duluxe, and a 59 bassman or a vox ac30 heritage handwired

Yeah. People are prepared, apparently, to pay right through the nose for so-so stuff brand new, but view a highly desirably piece of vintage gear as "second-hand." It's a little amazing to me.

"1959 Les Paul. Jissis, that's like... seventy years old. It's been around the block a bit, hey? It doesn't have too many scratches and it still works. I'll probably put some Seymour Duncans in it which'll put me out of pocket, but you can't buy a new Les Paul here anymore... Ok. I'll do you a favour. I'll give you 10K for it. If you throw in the messed up old Fender amp. Although I don't even know if I want it. I'll have to get something to cover up that dirty tweed."

It is a known fact that vintage guitars in SA are generally in better (crack-free) condition because our weather is generally much more suitable than the States and especially Canada. Yes, I think they are relatively more affordable here. It is also ironic how many owners think their guitars are worth a fortune just because they're old.

Really looking forward to that. The grass seems so much greener. It would be great to hear from someone who can make the comparison. Answer the "what if I'd moved to the States and started a band," question for a lot of us.

Well...it's still a while before you leave Mika. Keep those posts coming....most of us enjoy it ? Are you at peace now with Ibanez and The Parlotones...? ? I heard their KFC sponsorship is NOT going to be renewed..! ?

KFC lost money after I boycotted them, anyhow my band and i got a local burger spot sponser down the road, he agreed to throw fries in with every burger we buy...........
Yeh I shall get a go at big american music, see how it goes....... should be fun, ile shall keep all posted on this. And further hopefully ican act as a source for whoever needs gear sent to them.
Ibanez guitars, people think i posted that thread, but i didnt, really......... I share the same sentiment, maybe not as strongly............ Ibanez is a guitar rather you play it than no guitar ? just wear goggles

I am looking in the direction of Canada myself, as my Canadian GF who visited SA three times by now (each time well over 5 weeks) just can not see herself living here.
Hell, she does not even lock her doors at night and neither do her friends of other family members.
She hates the idea of electric fences, security gates and burglar proofingon each window.
She does not call houses in SA, houses, she refers to each on as Alcatraz.

SAD i know.
