Several GFSAers were at a world premier at TJs tonight - the evening on which Squonk dipped a toe into the waters of live performance. And I must say that he did a pretty good job. Played well, engaged the audience, hid any nerves that he may have had. Well done Squonk! Also present from the forum were Arjun, Stratisfear, Webejame, Brent and Fingerpicker Oh... and X-Rated Bob. It was good to meet GFSAers in the flesh. And I think they got their money's worth. Steve Newman put in a guest appearance and was amazing. He played a soprano guitar and two Mervyn Davis guitars - a customised Smoothtalker with built-in mbira and a lovely sounding flamenco guitar. I had the pleasure of meeting him, and it was a pleasure - he's a gentleman. And a heck of a player. He did a 30 minute set and then an encore.

TJs Acoustic Music Club convenes at Marks Park sports club in Emmarentia.

Most months they have three meets - first Thursday, third Thursday and last Thursday of the month. The last Thursday of the month is open mic night, the other two are more formal events with the performers invited by whoever is hosting/arranging the evening.

They don't always use the same room in Mark's Park. They usually use a smaller room for the open mic nights.

I think details of the next two meets (4th and 18th of March) are already posted on the forum already. But...

* Margaret's Daughter (acoustic rock duo)
* The Black Hats (Mike "Chappie" Sadie plus a violin player)

Both of these will in the "pavilion" the main, biggest room at Marks Park (just on your right as you drive in). Admission is R20. Food and drinks can be ordered from the Marks Park staff. Music starts at 20:00.

I have just confirmed. Next open mic night ~~should be~~ is March 25th.

TJ's sounds like my kinda place! Not to get up on stage and play...I'm not nearly there yet...but to appreciate the music and the vibe.

Is there anything like TJ's, in Slaapstad and surrounds? Only place I know of with open mic nights, is Corner Bar in Durbanville.

Oh geez, I'm sorry I missed this Squonk........had a meeting at Kmi's school and could not get away until after 8.

Actually, the way I remember it is that we picked up YOUR (and Squonk's) pieces of equipment and played them stukkend until you really, really had to go home... Hahaha.

I took it along because
1) People always want to see it
2) In case anybody decided they wanted to play but hadn't bought a guitar. It has a shorter scale than my other guitars and is a little easier to play. And it's very feedback resistant - so one less thing to worry about.

And if that was "messing around" then please let me know when you intend to get serious ?
