Several GFSAers were at a world premier at TJs tonight - the evening on which Squonk dipped a toe into the waters of live performance.

And I must say that he did a pretty good job. Played well, engaged the audience, hid any nerves that he may have had.

Well done Squonk!

Also present from the forum were Arjun, Stratisfear, Webejame, Brent and Fingerpicker Oh... and X-Rated Bob. It was good to meet GFSAers in the flesh.

And I think they got their money's worth. Steve Newman put in a guest appearance and was amazing. He played a soprano guitar and two Mervyn Davis guitars - a customised Smoothtalker with built-in mbira and a lovely sounding flamenco guitar. I had the pleasure of meeting him, and it was a pleasure - he's a gentleman. And a heck of a player. He did a 30 minute set and then an encore.

Yep. Squonk was live at the superbowl last night. He did some pretty nifty fingerwork all right - to thunderous applause.

Another world premiere was Bob doing the compere stuff. Looked like he'd been doing it all his life.

I must say that I have found the folks at TJs (and especially Rael Birns, Celia Chilton, Ken Bain, Tom Howden and Bill Hammond) very encouraging and friendly. I've said it before and I'll say it again, the people running TJs and the people that go there to listen WANT whoever is up on stage to do well and to enjoy themselves. They are very encouraging and supportive, and because of that attitude this is a very good venue for people wishing to venture into the world of live performance.

Completely agree with you. The audience was very supportive.

And the forumites who turned up were such excellent visitors!

TJs usually alternate between two rooms in the Marks Park complex. All under the same large roof, interconnected by corridors. TJs thus have rented some storage space for their speakers, amps etc within convenient distance of both rooms.

But last night, because of Steve Newman was going to be playing, they switched to a bigger venue, and one that was a little further away and required more than usual lugging around of equipment.

So what do Stratisfear, Ajrun and Co do at the end of the evening? Pick up pieces of equipment and help the TJs sound man to pack his van.

That was much appreciated at that time of the evening.

Actually, the way I remember it is that we picked up YOUR (and Squonk's) pieces of equipment and played them stukkend until you really, really had to go home... Hahaha.
