Keira-WitherKay
hi ya all, just thowing it out for suggestions.......... i'm having my own website built at moment ......... (i been using a free site so far) but decided to finally get my own site sans all that cheesy advertising on the free site..........
but now choosing a url addy is important i know......
ok 1st choice is keirawitherkay.co.za (it is available) but is long winded and hard to spell
witherkay.co.za which i like too and is easier (thanks bob this is your suggestion)
worldguitarist.co.za
nylonguitarist.co.za
kwmusic.co.za (but this ounds like a music store not a musician )
keiramusic.co.za
acousticguitarist.co.za
thing is it must either be my name or describe what i do which is ..acoustic/nylon string/ guitarist /world music .......... but i do not wanna use the words classical , flamenco , latin or jazz cos that compartementalises ( is that a word heheheh ) one even tho i do play those genres
so to the peeps out there in guitarforum land............ what you think........... ??????????
so far witherkay.coza is top of my list but i'm open for suggestion i want something easily spelt and easily remembered....

Hi Keira,
I would go with keiramusic.co.za
The reason for this is that witherkey.co.za is your surname, how many people know you on your surname?
Let's say you are playing a gig, do you think people will remember keira or witherkay?
The rest of the names just describe music and not you. This site is to promote you, not the music ?
I think keiramusic sums it up nicely!
PeteM
For me, witherkey.co.za rolls off the tongue better than keira.co.za.
Squonk
I go with Pete and Bob
witherkay.co.za
It's easy to remember and it stands for who you are ?
But maybe witherkay.com, even easier to remember

1) Try for a .COM. I get the feeling you won't always be in SA.
2) You can have multiple domain names pointing at one web site. So witherkay.co.za and witherkay.com could point to the same web site.
3) Long can work and may be the most practical. "keirawitherkay.co.za" is a bit long winded but it may be what people expect to work and just try. Richard Thompson uses richardthompson-music.com and the longish domain name doesn't see to have caused him any problems. John Martyn resources are at www.johnmartyn.com. IIRC there is a www.nickdrake.net. I think people expect the artist's name to be the domain name.
4) Think about registering keirawitherkay.com and keirawitherkay.co.za anyway. Jethro Tull had a large amount of trouble with somebody else owning the domain name "jethrotull.com".
FatBoy
I'd also go for keirawitherkay.com. I agree that the domain name should be the artist name, not a shortened version. Then I'd buy up some other domains as well (depending on your budget) and have then all redirect to keirawitherkay.com.
The domain name in itself isn't gonna win you many visitors, you need to apply some SEO (search engine optimisation) principles to get your site out there.
Let me know if you need any help / advice. I am a web developer by trade.

I like witherkay.co.za, keiramusic.co.za AND keirawitherkay.co.za

Bob, John is an easy name to spell, Keira isnt that common so It might be harder

www.keirawitherkay.com
www.keiraworldmusic.com
www.witherkaymusic.com

I would go with your first choice.........www.keirawitherkay.com ...........I don't believe that's difficult at all........if you googled "witherkay", you will probably get a million, and you will be on page 55, but the above name will come up first........that's important.... my 2c worth....

Time then for Keira to change her stage name to "Lady K" and do an acoustic cover of Queen Latifah's "Who You Calling A Bitch".

I like keiramusic.com

Ok, now I feel like an idiot! Read it as unavailable!
Changing my vote to keirawitherkay.co.za and get the .com as well if you can ?

Hey Keira
I own a graphic design and web development company so we always have our ears to the ground regarding what does and does not work online.
The last market research done end 2009 suggested that unless you are an internet giant like facebook, ebay, cnn ect..... almost 90% of internet users will access your site through a search engine like google. People will only remember the facebook, cnn, ebay url's because they are sites that are visited daily by the user. This means that for almost all non-daily visited websites, the user will first open a search engine, then type for instance Keira Witherkay and then use the results to navigate to your site. So in this day and age it is more important to raise your search rankings then anything else.
I would personally choose kmusic or witherkay because they are easier to remember as EMAIL addresses. Having an easy to remember email address is key.
Hope this helps
AlanRatcliffe
Do what I did and get surname.co.za and fullname.com and alias them together. I have the advantage of an easy email address (
name@surname.co.za) and if a yank just types in my name, they get me too. Search engines also rank your site higher if the domain name is the same as the name they are searching for.

My 2cents
www.keiraguitar.com
or the other one already mentioned
www.keiramusic.com
The music might be a little bit wide for your specific market, but not the end of the world. Keira to me is easier to remember or gets stuck in my head faster than your surname.

Add the red section to home.html or index.html then specify what you want the search engines to glean from your site
<!DOCTYPE HTML PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.01 Transitional//EN">
<html>
<head>
<META NAME = "Description" CONTENT = "Music by Keira Witherkay, including Jazz lessons, whatever, whatever" >
<META NAME ="Keywords" CONTENT="Guitar, Jazz, Musician, available for gigs, nylon string, green guitarist, sober, whatever" >
<meta http-equiv="content-type" content="text/html; charset=ISO-8859-1">
<meta name="generator" content="Web Page Maker V2">
You can modify this section using Notepad, and then ftp back to the relevant repository which is public_html on most providers
If you right-click on your web page and select “View Source” you will see the present code.

Unfortunately google and other bots don't look at META TAG's anymore.
People abused the tags. Now it is better to get a site well setup and get a site map.
Then also get as many link backs to your site.
Just my 5c worth ?
FatBoy
Agreed, meta tags have lost their value since people started abusing them. Best is to use standards compliant markup, structure your content well, get a sitemap sorted and submitted to google, and get lots of links back to your site from other sites. Pretty much what inflames said

You guys are right, and I hope you can guide Keira in this matter, the "description" tag is still read by Google, what follows is a quote from the Google Master Blog :
"There are still people in the SEO community who wrongly say that none of the major search engines use the keywords meta tag. Both Ask and Yahoo! still seem to look at it, but of course they don't allow it to have significant influence in competitive queries."

Both Ask and Yahoo! still seem to look at it
Indeed Peters, I think that Yahoo will discontinue this pretty soon.
Also can anyone on this forum tell me when last they used Ask or Yahoo to search for items?
I just went to ask for the first time in 13 years and had a good laugh!
