Fender Super Reverb 65' Valve amp(Black face)

Hi guys,

My valve amp came back from repairs and it sounds warm and awesome!

I would like to restore it a bit since its over 40 years old and would like to know if anyone here ever did this before?(restore that model)

What i'd like to do is re-cover the wood, cleanout the speakers and create a new face plate

I can get the face plate made but how do i get the original writing on it again?

I will post some pics of the current condition but heres a pic a the re-issue

What's wrong in the posting? :-\ It seems to be a Valve ? amp you have there?

You could get a clone face plate from Mojotone.com if you do not mind spending a bit. You'll just need to add the logo. How bad is the original?

Ye. U should really try keep it as original as possible.
A 65(blackface) is a real collectors amp. If the plate is real terrible then spend a bit on the clone, like Karel said.

I remember when I first got my 66 Vibrolux Reverb, I wanted to replace the grill cloth and fix up the Tolex.
When the guys on the Fender Forum in the Vintage Amps section heard about it they went crazy...they said leave it as is.

How about those GEC KT66s, and the original Red Label Jensens.

As far as looks go, I've always felt that a vintage amp in an advanced stage of distress is very cool 8)

If the outside of the amp is still 100% original I would say keep it like that!

The original faceplate is not that bad.It just looks worn but now that some of you are saying that i should keep the 'vintage' look , i might consider doing that.

I used this amp in a show that i'm currently doing at onbroadway called "Folk Rock Heroes" last night and it sounds Swwweeeeeet ? ?

@Tokai- Are those Jensens or Fender speakers? Reason for asking is that my amp has 4 X 10 inch speakers with blue Fender labels on it so not sure if its Jensens with Fender branding?

Umm - that's a Silverface. Have you got the date codes from the tube chart?

I'd replace the missing grillecloth and leave the original tolex (boot polish, black markers and black gaffer tape do wonders if you want to make it look a little less scrappy).

The Fender Super Reverb was a guitar amplifier made by Fender. It was introduced in 1963 and was discontinued in 1982. This was essentially a Fender Super amplifier with built-in reverb and vibrato. The original Super Reverb amplifiers were all tube design and featured spring reverb. There were two different designs, distinguishable by the color of the "face" or front control panel. Super Reverbs from 1963 through 1967 had "black face" panels. From 1968 until its discontinuation in 1982, the Super Reverb had "silverface" cosmetics and circuitry. Early models in 1968, while cosmetically "Silverface", did contain "Blackface" circuitry. Fender introduced a reissue '65 Super Reverb in 2001.

Silverface models: 45 watts (power increased to 70 watts in 1975 and was given a Master volume with pull-out boost circuit and a solid state rectifier. Changed to 135 watts RMS in 1978 with an additional Mid control pot for the Normal channel and a Line Out jack socket.)

Tube (Valve) Complement: 4 X 12AX7, 2 X 12AT7, 2 X 6L6, 1 X 5AR4/GZ34 RectifierTube for blackface amps and 5U4GB for silver face amps

2 Channels: Normal and Vibrato, with Bright Switch

Weight: approx. 65 lbs.

A "Boost" control and a master volume were added in 1975.
A Mid control for the Normal channel and a Line Out jack socket were added in 1978.
Super Reverbs produced between late 1980 and 1981 have blackface cosmetics and a silver sparkle grille cloth.
Master volume has a pull-out pot for distortion.

Well it depends what look you are going for.... I second or third the calls to leave them as is for that "Coolness factor"

However if youer looking for that "Studio coolness-ness" build a new box in Mahogany with a heavy leather stiched handle - like those dog collars. It will drive the doo wa girls wild
