Hello, all.
I'm a Cape Town journalist, currently active in the sci-tech field.
Playing since Standard 6... which was in 1970.
Classical background, but gravitated towards folk, jazz and Latin American. As a result my playing has been influenced by the likes of Bonfa, Baden Powell, Wes Montgomery and, yes, James Taylor.
My favourite album is John McLaughlin's Extrapolations and my first album was Mason Williams's Hand Made, which I bought as a teenager in the US and somehow managed to retain to this day.
Career highlights include sharing a stage with Jonathan Butler (admittedly at different times), playing before an audience of 7 000 at the Good Hope Centre wearing a fez as part of the Young Men Malay Choir (ons het omtrent alles weggevat daai jaar behalwe die Best Dress) and sitting at Joe Pass's feet at Ronnie Scott's.
The herd currently consists of Yamaha CG-110CE classical electric, Yamaha C40 classical and Maton FG-150 12-string. (I still miss the early-model Ovation Balladeer that I sold to finance a classical.) I prefer Savarez 520 P2s on the nylon-string models and Ernie Ball Earthwood Lights on the 12-string.
