Can drumming affect your guitar playing?

I dabble a bit in playing drums. Nothing serious, just for fun.
I was wondering if the motion of the wrists in playing drums can aversely affect your guitar playing.
I've got a pain in my left forearm more towards the elbow... Not sure what caused it, but just checking.

its probably because you are doing it wrong.
Go for a few drum lessons to learn the different techniqeus, or watch drum videos on youtube.

I reckon drumming can affect your guitar playing in a positive way. ? It's good discipline in holding a strict tempo as well as helping you to count the bar numbers. But yeah, if drumming causes physical problems, you're probably doing something wrong. Good idea to follow Lethe's advice and take a few drumming lessons.

yeah, that's why i started. Drummer always use way more interesting rhythmic patterns than most guitarist. So it's nice to see and understand and (try) do what some good drummers do... I guess I should take some lessons...

Another thing i notice from alot of drummers is their ego ego ego ego ego..........the drummers with the ego's always want to be noticed, so they play very loud and put in as much drum fills as they can.

I dont play drums myself, but if i hear a drum beat i like i play air drums on my legs.
When composing songs i just play air drums to figure out the beat, since i got a pretty big imaginary drum set ? sounds crazy i know, but hay its invisible and free......ha ha

nah drumming won't affect your guitar playing ..... i'm making a living incorporating drumming into my acoustic guitar style ........ but yeah it is physically draining ...and every once in a while when i need to play longer gigs i strap up my wrist with an elastic sports bandage which is a preventative measure to not let me injure my wrist ... but yeah i would liken my drumming more to what a djembe player does so using the majority of the flat hand and then a bit with brush's too. but i still use and move both feet like a drummer( bass drum and hi hat ) which till i got really 'gig" fit caused me to tire easily .... initially i'd pour with sweat after the 1st set but now i do up to 4 hour gigs no prob......

so yeah maybe the pains are just you getting 'gig" fit , the body must get used to the motions.......

and yeah as a few people said drumming will allow you to get a fabulous sense of timing ..... for what you do on guitar .. and the worst thing is that only once your timing gets to a point of being rock solid do you realise when you jam with people just how bad some peoples time is.......... so all a learning curve .and in my humble opinion a good one

Only bad drummers lose tempo and ego inflation can befall any musician - in fact anyone at all no matter what business, social or even forum situation. I'm not a drummer, but why knock the guys? They are a necessary part of music making particularly in the pop, rock, metal, blues and jazz genres, which seems to be the main thrust of this forum.

I think it effects players on a lot of instruments.

Good timing is an under-valued asset for any player on any instrument in any genre.

On the lighter side.....Yes, no doubt drumming, bad drumming can affect your guitar playing..... ?...there is nothing worse than to play with a bad drummer ! It affects everyone in the band... ☹

You're right, a good drummer, who holds the tempo, can mask the shortcomings of a sloppy guitarist. ?
I've also known bands to blame their drummer for holding the tempo whilst they either race or slow down.

Agree...especially if the lead guitarist can't keep a beat....just as bad. ☹

if you're playing with a drummer who can't keep time, you need a new drummer.
The first thing a drummer must be able to do is keep time, not do fancy fills.
And the metronome goes for any instrument. As does the Ego.

We had a drummer in a cover band that I was involved with a while ago. We struggled through a few painful practices until one day we decided to try a few Beatles numbers, the guy sounded exactly like Ringo Star so needless to say we had to let him go. ☹
