Bob-Dubery For me tone is part of an overall package. The key thing for me is that it doesn't get too out of whack with the part being played. Two of my favourite albums from the 70s are David Bowie's Ziggy Stardust and Joan Armatrading's third album. The guitarists on those two albums are Mick Ronson and Jerry Donohue. I love the playing on both records, but if, by some sorcery, the parts they played on the records stayed the same but they swopped tone I don't think each would sound as good. I like tone, and I notice changes in tone, but for me if we have to consider the tone too much then maybe the part isn't too good anyway, and if the tone is OK but not great but the part is great then that works just fine for me. Jimmy Page, for me, often didn't have GREAT tone but it never got in the way of what he was playing, so that's all OK. Tone is just an effect. Just a thought. I'll leave it with you. Use it. Don't use it.
