TJs have asked me to run their open mic night on the 25th of this month. Part of the reason for this is that they want to get some new faces into the club - both comperes and performers. So once again here's a chance for those of you who want to break your performing duck this year. You need minimum one, maximum three songs or instrumentals that you can play - solo or with others, originals or covers. My brief from the club is that preference is to be given to new faces, so if you are new to performing or to TJs and you want to play then you will play and I will try to accomodate requests from those who want to play at a specific time. TJs provide PA, microphones and lines into their mixing desk. If you just want to sit in the audience then that's also OK. TJs Acoustic Music Club. Marks Park sports club, Judith Road, Emmarentia, Johannesburg Thursday 25th February Music starts at 20:00 Drinks and hot meals can be ordered from the Marks Park staff. Admission: R20. If you want to play you can just turn up on the night, but you can also PM me in advance.

Congratulations Bob, I'm sure you will add to the show with your extensive knowledge of the music both acoustic and electric.

I collected my bounced Taylor from Andy and it is as good as new. In the process I took pity on a Larrivee LV-09 that was being murdered by an enthusiastic strummer in the sound room. I will post a picture shortly.

I guess I will use the Taylor (the ballerina) for close quarter combat at the open mic night, the Koa LV 10 when I play with a group (because of the strong midrange) and the LV 09 (Sitka and Indian Rosewood) when I play on my own on the main stage at TJs. The fuller tone of the LV 09 is a really complete sound.

I am running the March 18 event at TJs and will post the details later It will be a mixture of flamenco and Jazz from Keira and Alicia, Jeff Dix with some vicious fretwork, The Cellphone Cowboys playing low down swamp music combined with Latin American jazz ,either with Nylon string guitar or keyboards. I have an old varsity friend coming up from Durbs who plays the Jazz circuit and has produced a few Jazz/ Latin CDs. Them Particles will hopefully close the evening with their mesmeric sound. One slot still has to be filled, maybe Bob wants to make his first solo appearance on the main stage?

OK... on my way out of TJs last night I got collared by the Chairman. They are aware of GFSA and are always keen to make new friends and see new faces up on the stage, and he says he hopes lots of y'all turn up next Thursday - hopefully to play, but you are of course welcome to just come along and see what it's all about.

Just a few notes that may help to calm some first night nerves

1) This is a friendly club. Really. The audience are generally supportive and encouraging. No need to worry about them.
2) The venue used for open mic night is smaller, less intimidating, more cosy than the bigger room they use for their fornightly concerts
3) There will be people there to show you which lead to use, to help you adjust the mic position etc

My instructions from El Supremo himself are that I am to wipe the board clean as soon as I get there, keep all slots open initially for new and infrequent visitors and tell the regulars that they're at the back of the queue. So if you want to play then you will play.

Yes, Squonk, I will have a guitar with me (one of the duties of the host is to fill in if all the slots are not taken), and yes you can borrow it if you break a string (all my guitars have a pickup in them - so no worries on that front).

I don't know a street number. But

b) There's not much else around to cause confusion. Melville Koppies on one side of the road, Marks Park on the other.

I'll also bring along my acoustic and nylon so incase someone needs a guitar (both Ibanez)

I don't think that'll be a problem - but it is considerate to not use the flash. I've even had photos taken of me. I often see people videoing or snapping their friends/family on the stage.

Again very considerate of you. I will be taking two guitars anyway - and I don't plan to play much because my elbow has been giving me gyp.

But do not feel obliged to lend your guitar to people - especially if you don't know them.

The audience there have what I call "big ears" IE they can appreciate a wide range of music.

yeah they'll love what you do Conrad ........ as bob said a very open audience ........ and i have seen such a variety there .... even the amazing the jug band with a tea box bass and playing spoons and washboards and they were excellent ....... and then we get classical purists and then every thing inbetween ........ so yeah have no fear i watched your dvd's you posted they'll love what you do BIG Time......

hope i can make it grrrrrrrrrr especially wanna check out steve again .what a treat

Sorry to fade, guys, but I haven't had the time to prepare anything and got a mega deadline for end Feb so I'm gonna have to give it a miss.

I'll probably miss tomorrow which is a pity because I REALLY WANTED to see Steve but I am going to organize.

The only thing is that I'll probably want to use a condenser mic for the flamenco guitar. If there isn't a good condenser mic there, I can bring my own.

I'd planned to - but it's a steel string. I was going to take along 2 guitars so that if a GFSAer decided that they wanted to have a go and needed a guitar I could help out. And the Smoothtalker, with it's slightly shorter scale, is probably a little easier to play. Also it's pretty feedback resistant.
