Congratulations Singy.........well, now you have ALL the answers you wanted.........boy, I probably stood for about half an hour trying to decide between the LS95S and the LS150.........in the end, the P90s won my heart........I've got an LP Standard, so I wanted something a little different....I LOVE MY LS95S.......... ?

And what a fantastic review......well done, and welcome to the world of TOKAI, ......maybe we should have a "Tokai owners club" ...hahahahahaha........just kidding!

singemonkey wrote But I guess when you're working and you don't have kids, you can indulge yourself a little. :-[

I however do have kids, and my excuse is, they will inherit them all one day......hahahahah

Lance must be in his 7th heaven........ ?

Heh! I was the other way around - with P90s in the deluxe and an HSS Pacifica. Wanted to finally have the twin humbucker LP.

Nice one. I'll remember that ?

Lance must be in his 7th heaven........ ?

He should be. All he needed to do was get these guitars into a few hands. He knew they'd sell themselves.

Congrats Singe,

I knew you'd love it. Hard not to. Remember I had the luxury of testing every single one of those Tokais and I have to say that I still think I got the best one of the lot. ?

That is to say in the looks dept (IMHO)

Out of all the Love Rocks that I tested when Lance got them initially, there was not a dud amongst them.

Could the same be said about Gibson? Hmmmm........

Good luck with the guitar.

Cheers,

Peter.

I love the burst, just so pretty.

Just as some quick input, I believe there is a tenon difference between LS9x and LS15x models. Perhaps Lance can validate or (Opposite of that? Loong long day at work) this.

I have played 2 tokais. One wasn't that awesome, the other was the best LP type in the shop. Keen to try out more, and compare it to my Epi ?

singemonkey

The 150s (now 160) and up have the 50s-style long neck tenon apparently. The lower models have a longer than normal tenon - that's referred to as "medium." Not as long as the historic long tenon, but longer than the tenon on a factory Gibson Les Paul.

Oh. Had a look in the control cavity... :? The cut of the cavity, and the wiring, is crazy neat. And those orange drop capacitors are so fat and juicy, you could eat 'em ?

It's got all the little '50s details: the little metal position markers on the bell knobs, the way the binding leaves a strip of maple visible in the cutaway, the longer toggle switch with the amber tip. The top is deeply carved. My Deluxe was from the first year that Gibson reintroduced the deep carve and the sharper headstock angle. But even it was flatter than the '50s guitars, and the headstock angle was 17 degrees instead of 18. Not only does the Tokai have an 18 degree headstock, but the carve is deep enough that the ring around the toggle switch actually bends onto the slope of the top.

Nice guitar SM. Enjoy !

Re. headstock angles.....the '68 Gibson GT reissue and later 70's and early 80's LP's had a 14 degree angle whereas the 50's had a 17 degrees angle. CS LP models were at 17 deg from about 1993 onwards. Since 2002 all Gibsons reverted to 17 deg.

Congrats Singemonkey, it looks great! It is hard buying a guitar unseen, I am glad you got a good one ?

BTW Did you end up selling the Angus SG?

No worries. Apparently they're pretty much all good. ?

Still on the market. :? Now at least I'm not under pressure to flog it cheap to get the Tokai - especially since I have been totally avoiding playing it to preserve it's near-mint status ☹. It's such a sweet guitar. But I think I'm a Les Paul guy ?

I had a nasty suspicion I was getting mixed up here. Weird thing as well. No one good give me good info on my '83 Deluxe which didn't seem to fit the Deluxe description. Found the 83 catalogue and it seems they'd gone back to a lot of "vintage" features - including the 17 degree headstock. It also has a mahogany neck, solid mahogany body, small headstock, deeper top carve and all this other stuff which is totally different from the usual Deluxe description (although weirdly the recent reissues seem to be the same as these 80s models - not the more famous 70s ones). So I guess I should have twigged to the 17 degree thing.

I must bring these guitars round to show you one of these days.

Thanks Peter. Luckily for me, it so happens that I'm not really a fan of a lot of flame - and quilt tops are just way to far for me. The most flame I really like on one of these maple tops is just a hint, like on Jimmy Page's number one Les Paul. Mostly I like them plain. So I guess we both got the best looking one - respectively. ?[/quote]

SM...I would love to see/feel the Tokai...I'm no fan of "monster flame tops" myself...my '59 has just a hint of flame which depends on the viewing angle.
