There is unrest in the forrest, there is trouble with the trees....

Squonk

Had a couple of family members over at my house last night.

Huge big storm and lots of wind, Huge - Monumental tree in my front garden split in two and fell over my gate blocking all of us inside my property.

Used the internet to find a 24 hour tree feller, and there are some!

at 02:00 AM the "feller" eventually managed to cut the tree free from the gate and everyone could go home.

He's coming back today to take out the rest of the tree, it's creaking and aiming at my house!

This is what part of the front looks like this morning. See the mound of tree cuttings on the other side of the palisade...

Just missed my father in laws BMW by about 50 cm
Believe it or not , Cut my grass on Sunday and look how long it is on Thursday! ☹

FatBoy

Hectic dude! Trees can cause LARGE amounts of damage! Thats why I do my best in burning as much wood as I can on the braai, and buying as many guitars as I can. We each have to do our bit!

inflames

That is hectic! Glad no one was injured during this event!

Tree fellers walk into a bar...
No seriously, up in JHB for a week or so and dang that wind gave the south easter a run for it's money. Glad no injuries!

Keira-WitherKay

wow ..... what a scary thing to happen

i just wonder if a tree falls onto your mercedes in a storm and no ones at home does it make a sound?

A tree in our complex also blew over last night. On my way to work this morning I had to turn around and go out the other exit, It fell across the entire road... and ripped a tap on the way down so the water is flooding everything too..

Funny, I slept like a baby, never heard a thing....

And you told nobody because? Hell, man - fanfare could've been arranged.

I don't know what's going on with Joburg's apocalyptic weather lately! Squonk, I'm glad no further damage was wrought. Last Friday there was another of those cataclysmic storms just as I was wandering through Delta Park and came upon a goose that had become entangled in a snare of thick fishing gut. It was some way out into the dam, and I had to wade into shoulder-deep water to rescue it, but at the time the rain was flying parallel to the ground and trees were being uprooted, branches ripped off, and pathways being converted into muddy torrents. It was just insane, so violent. I was probably safer out in the water because it was just carnage near the trees...

Riaan

Hey Squonk glad to hear it wasn't too serious and that you guys are ok. I must say, it never even would've occurred to me to go searching for a 24 hour tree feller... certainly not in my town, where a late night snack could prove to be a challenge to find.

singemonkey

Trees are dangerous, and it's high time they were abolished. When will people realise the threat and take action!?

BMU

Scary.

Keira WitherKay wrote i just wonder if a tree falls onto your mercedes in a storm and no ones at home does it make a sound?

Ah, the Schrodinger's Tree paradox. Fundamentally the Mercedes exists in both a smashed and non-smashed state until said aural detection occurs. The causal direction is therefore difficult to establish. For instance if everyone whore ear muffs, the Merc might have been just fine.

aja

Poor tree ☹

I like old big trees

Whoa, Freudian typo? Something in your dreams about Merc drivers? ? ?

Awesome - did it survive?
SANCOB is about 15 minutes drive from here so birds in trouble can be taken there ... where would you take a bird in JHB - Delta Park - is that JHB?
In Pta its Wings in Need in case anyone's interested

Anyway back to ze humour ....

[deleted]

Linds, I had called the folks at FreeMe, up here in JHB, so they came to pick up the goose at the dam...but they put it down. This made me very sad and quite angry - yes, a wild bird with an amputated wing wouldn't survive, but they didn't make any effort (as far as I know) to find it a new home. Rands and cents, as usual, I guess. ☹

These morons with their fishing line that gets left all over the place. Its terrible. ah well you tried ...

Alas... the fanfare would have had to be very loud to drown out the din of bad voice over artists... even had to turn down a tea offer from Keira might still make it before I leave ?
But I'm back every two weeks anyway.

Squonk, I took this picture yesterday (using my phone) during a walk at James & Ethel Gray Park, in Melrose. I've seen SO many palisade fences ruined like this (thanks to the storms) since your post:

Squonk

@ Strat My tree landed like that on my gate, which was a bit stronger than the fence, and by some huge miracle nothing broke.

The Tree Feller explained that these trees absorb water which causes the branches to break off.

Got lots of firewood for winter ?
