and so on - imagine a creep of tortoises crossing the road and you're in a hurry.

There's a famous inspector Morse episode in which Morse upsets the family of the murdered corpse by getting into an argument with Lewis over collective nouns whilst they're standing over the body.

I think it was "an exultation of larks" that they were looking for. Either that or "a murder of crows".

As I recall, the patently ridiculous Not the Nine O'Clock News skit about a "flange of baboons" actually brought that word into the popular lexicon, and it even cropped up in some academic papers...
