Is it just me or does Jack White kinda sound like Robert Plant at times? Too bad I havent got a mate from the States like all you okes. ? Will maar wait for the Dvd, cause Kimberley sure as hell wont have it on the big screen...

so for a young guitarist to be thrown into a room /docci with 2 legends from the decades of 70's and 80's and to still come out looking fabulous and not being intimidated or swamped by the legends...shows great presense.....

Check out The Dead Weather, Jack's the guy behind the music but the drummer in the band! IMHO the best release of 2009. Dean Fertita plays guitar and does a bang up job...

I finally got a look at this documentary. The thing that kept on coming to me was that Page has laid down some great guitar parts. He was a little sloppy, I think he often has been that way. Or perhaps it's fairer to say that he prefers a first take with a good attitude to multiple retakes in the search for zero defects.

I was quite impressed by Jack White's music. I found him simultaneously the most contrived and the most candid of the interviewees.

I need a 2nd look to firm up some other opinions. I was more impressed by Edge's playing than I'd thought I would be.

I enjoyed the comments from the three of them about the creative process. It's comforting to know that it's perspiration as well as inspiration.

Hi, I called Ster Kinekor to ascertain the date of theatrical release here in good old RSA and the news is that they have decided not to have a theatrical release any more. So this doccie I am afraid will not be on the local circuit.

I really like some of the things Jack White does, but I just can't seem to get into any of his albums that I've heard. I can take the Raconteurs, but it seems like he just needs to do some solo stuff, IMO.

Ok so this is weird I'm watching a docci on three guitarist that I have heard but never paid much attention to. My opinion of the 3 prior to watching the docci (warning these are my personal opinions if you are easily offended don't read on)

Jack White - White Stripes - seven nation army - yawn
The Edge - U2 - Bono - Please G*d put me out of my misery.
Jimmy Page - Led Zepplin - 20 minute guitar solos that start nowhere and go nowhere

And for my post docci opinion

There's more to Page than 20 minute solos. His craftsmanship was fantastic. Not just the solos but the riffs and the other parts behind the songs. He was one of the few 60s (and 70s for that matter) guitar heroes who was convincing and equally potent on acoustic and electric. Then there was the way that he poured so many things into the Zep melting pot. Some Indian things, but also a lot of American and British folk styles that he'd picked up on (he was, for example, hugely influenced by Bert Jansch which puts him in a lineage of guitar stylists who derive from Davey Graham), and not just on the acoustic songs. His parts in Rain Song are typical of the use of alternate tunings popular in 60s British folk. There's some rock-a-billy in the mix too. More than handy with a slide. Knew how to get GREAT sound in the studio... He was a real box of tricks.

Listen to Babe I'm Going to Leave You on the first album and listen to the power he works up with acoustic guitars.

What I liked about Zep was that they weren't just about heaviness and long blues jams. They had a whole 'nother side to them as well with the folky, gentler stuff. They were like proto-metal, but also had that hippy cosmic thing going. They had one foot in the 60s and one in the 70s.

Maybe I was a tad hard on Page after all Zep IV was one of my favourite LP's for many years even bought the CD eventually. "Black Dog" is a killer riff and "Since I've been loving you" is a textbook perfect example on how to approach a harmonic minor blues. However the man seems to have gone into retirement so he doesn't inspire me as much as the old timers that are still performing such as Gillmour, Clapton Buddy Guy et al.

Some times it's better to burn out than fade away.

Though I think in Page's case the projects he tried - movie soundtracks, a collaboration with Paul Rodgers - never really caught the eye. He didn't forge a solo identity for himself as Clapton did, and so in terms of public interest it's pretty much Zeppelin or nothing for him. Plant, OTOH, has done quite well as a solo act, both in terms of output and as regards creating an identity that can stand alone without Zeppelin.

I do think that some guys go on way too long. I don't think Clapton has particularly added to his body of work over the last 20 or so years. I wish Paul McCartney would just shut up. I wasn't happy to see The Police reform and basically tour as a Police tribute band. There was nothing new, and as a band they'd said all they had to say years ago.

oh i so agree, and i don't mind him being contrived........

this is show biz...... all the greats had ego's, strong opinions, personal hangups and this feeling of them knowing in a way they "something special" some might call it ego ....

i think is what drives em to be just that ........ something special........ originality is what impresses not just me but what every big star has when they "impress" the whole music industry..........

no one wants another vai/clapton/knofler/page the list continues. but jack white just comes across as fresh and not wanting to be anything other than himself which i admire ........and i love his approach of anti technology/industry bull s&*t of how he plays whatever he has available and makes it work.... this attitude alone should inspire everyone who thinks they need top end guitars to sound good or get anywhere in industry....
the talent is in the player and the skill jack white has is to get the best out of what you have.......... truly inspiring

i'm also now a new fan of jack white..........

My dad knows a lot and he tells me that the reason Jimmy Page could never be a solo artist was because he can't sing.

I've also downloaded all the "ITG Loud" movie in parts from Youtube and watched it.

Although Dimebag is my man I must say I like The Edge and he is just amazing the way he sets up his stuff and gets those tones. How about his rig!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I also love Jimmy, he's just great, another original, very articulate and a class act, as is evident on EVERYTHING Zep!
Jack White however - he's just a rubbish garbage guitarist deluxe! AND WHERE DID HE GET THAT DRUMMER CHICK MAN. ? I suppose all the record people are just looking for something different, never mind how bad it might be. I saw the Youtube link above too - BAAAAAAAAAAAD! The reason that chick drummer probably plays with him is because he can't get any half decent muso's to play with him, and vice versa. So they're perfect for one another - Both S**t ?

Found her in a bar in Detroit. It's his ex-wife. See it's chick -> groupie -> girlfriend -> fiancee -> wife -> ex-wife.
A drummer roommate of mine once made the comment that no guitarist so insignificant there's no groupies for him/her.

Dude, it's totally fair to rag on bands and performers you don't like on this forum. But, firstly, we generally try to substantiate why we're saying these things (explain) and, secondly and more importantly, your little rant comes off as offensively sexist. She's not a drummer? She's a drummer chick? And then you feel the need to say it again, in case we missed the terrible fact that Jack White hired a woman as a drummer. What exactly is so important about her being a woman that you felt compelled to include that? The implication is that you think that the fact that she's not good, in your opinion, has a lot to do with her sex.
