IIRC Page had a custom made fuzz box that he used early on with the Zep. He used a telecaster a lot for their recordings and recorded solos. He had great ideas about how things could sound and also knew how to get those sounds. His skill in the studio with mic placing etc was a big part of their recorded sound. IMO he should get a lot of the credit for Bonzo's drum sound.
Zeppelin occasionally ran into problems at the mastering stage in the vinyl era. A notable example is "When The Levee Breaks" - they had to sacrifice some of the drum sound to be able to cut it. So it's worth seeking out the remastered CDs so that you can hear the drum sound they wanted to get on to the records.
