man JPJ is zeppelin, without him page was just jeff beck with an amazing singer and the craziest coolest drummer around
Without wishing to dispute JPJ's excellence as a musician, I disagree with that.
Page was the visionary behind Zep. It was clearly all his ideas early on - the material and their sound. If he hadn't done it with Jones (who was not a first choice) he'd have done it with Chris Dreja (who was first choice) or another bassist.
Plant and Jones made bigger contributions to Zep's sound as time and the albums went by, or were allowed more input, but it was Page's vision. Beck had had similar ideas, but he lacked Page's focus and consistency. Page also had major production and arrangement chops that were crucial to the band's sound.
once again i disagree, listen to a couple jeff beck albums, you sit there thinking, wow someone is ripping someone off
they did live down the street from one another and they were good friends so its bound to happen
but either way, the two sound really similar, they both covered the same song in two seperate albums released months away from each other
Ya we know page was the brains and all that true, so that makes him better at marketing, guitar, organization, chop owndership, but there is JPJ
in all his humbleness with the mandolin, the piano, the bass, the recorder, organ, guitar, autoharp, ukulele, sitar, cello and more even
Since I've been loving you is different as a slow minor blues not only because Page adds some moxolydian in there but listen to the ambience set
by the organ, sure other people could have done that, but look whos doing it... Black Dog, thats one of Zeppelins most rocking guitar tracks
JPJ made it, he can play guitar so well he made one of the most complex and sick set of licks of all time, and he did it at 4/5 timing!
Stairway to heaven is made epic by his use of the recorder in producing that surreal epic quality which makes the song..... surreal and epic!
No quarter, it was all his.. iv already listed the other i dont need to go on
I agree, Page was the man behind Zeppelin, it wouldnt have started without him, it wouldnt have had direction without him, it would have sucked without his skills
and his production techniques, this is all true, it wouldnt have even been a pipe dream without him.. however, Zeppelin wouldnt have been Zeppelin without JPJ
they would be minus down 10 of their most DIFFERENT songs, which all the fans here have listed as the reason why Zeppelin rocked so much
because they had that OTHER side... he and pages occultish need to be weird are together the Zeppelin we all respect and fear.. he makes Zeppelin not be Sabbath
and btw Chris Dreja? he was the guy in yardbirds who was actually a guitarist until page kicked him to bass? how could a pop group guitar note following simpleton
who was pushed into playing the bass follow in JPJ's footsteps? didnt he take up photography? that was a good move..
listen to some songs, JPJ follows the guitar in some cuz thats his job and it works well, listen to some others, he is running everywhere doing the
craziest things yet keeping time going strong
