TomCat Hi all How readily available is Swamp Ash in SA? If it is not readily available, what is a good alternative for a guitar body that is available locally. I'm looking at a similar tone that Ash will give.
[deleted] If you're willing to risk it, Tom, there are some ashes growing in the Botanic Garden at Emmarentia. Hahahaha

TomCat Just found these people....http://www.ifatimber.co.za/index.htm ....looks promising.. :-\ Has anyone had any dealings with them?
MikeM That's most likely Northern Ash.. I've got some... Easily twice as heavy as swamp. Swamp ash will most likely be imported stuff. Not easy to find at all here. Why ash though?
AlanRatcliffe In my experience, there is no real alternative for ash tonally. Fullers list both black (Swamp/southern) and white (baseball bat/northern). The thing with having a musical wood supplier who sells blanks and importing is you can often specify weight range - a single plank of swamp ash ranges in weight quite a lot from the bottom to the top.

Gearhead I can recommend not building a burst if you're a beginner at finishing. It sure ain't easy ? Should anybody be bringing in a batch of swamp ash, I'm keen on sharing shipping. LMI?

MikeM I do need a black strat body... MUST RESIST. Need to finish my tele first. Tom, I have a spare Poplar blank sitting around the garage. Has had some time to age even hehehe.. You're welcome to it in payment for all the help? It's not a mind blasting tonewood, but it tools easily so might we worth trying on?
