Effects chain in multi effects processors

i Have a Boss GT6, and was wondering if there is a general rule when putting effects into the effects chain, IE which ones produce a better tone.
even when certain effects are turned off they still affect the tone.

your help is greatly appreciated

If you only want to use your processor for effects (delay/chorus etc.) then plug it into your return loop and your guitar into the amp's input.
That way you still use all the tone the amp produce.

If you have a valve amp you can use your return loop with your processor and bypass the pre-amp valves. This way you can use the processors amp models.

there is no general rule. Unless you are using an effect loop on an amp but the order of effects is up to you.

If you want to Overdrive the Wah or wah the overdrive its all up to what you want. Experiment away...

of course if you're lazy then the atricle posted is a good way to do it and has been tried and tested already

im using an Ibanez TB100r combo solidstate amp, so no valves, and also not using the effects loop.
basically guitar -> GT6 -> Amp

Agreed Gearhead, just giving the options ? By doing that (replacing pre-amp valves with modeling) you are killing the entire idea in using a valve amp ?

With some valve amps that's a good thing. ? Bypassing the amp's pre, you end up with a much wider range of tones at the expense of some true "valviness". Anyway, most of a tube amp's real tone and feel in the power stage, IMO.

Indeed! For instance you can use a mesa boogie preamp modulation on your power valves to get a different tone!
