Do you like jazz?

Try as I might, I just can't develop an attachment to jazz. I don't like the chords used and a lot of the playing sounds like scale exercises. I realise that these musicians are probably at the top of the musical tree,so why doesn't it connect? (I know you're thinking "because you're at the bottom of the tree, dumb ass") On the other hand, I love Martin Taylors work, is it because he connects by playing something familiar, and then deviates..... Should I see a doctor? Is there someting wrong with me? PS I wonder what Martin Taylor's middle name is? Gibson? (old forum) Poll Results: Do you like jazz? Yes: 16 No: 5

I like Jazz-lite....
Norah Jones, Katie Melua, Jamie McCullum - hell, even Michael Buble!

But good jazz guitar is spectacular when done right, and our S.A. players are among the best. Jimmy Dludlu is the shizzle imo, and even Ernie Smith is great.
So its a bit like F1 racing for me. Both represent the pinnacle of skill in their respective genres, but mostly I can't be bothered.

Renesongs wrote I love Jazz most of my music collection is jazz - I just can't seem to get into playing it on guitar much (a little too heady for me) Jazz bass well that's a different story 8)

I do love me those bass lines. Got a friend who plays upright, honestly I used to spend the whole night following the bass and brushes.

I've been listening to jazz on and off for about 3 years. I could never say that I enjoyed it, but I thought perhaps I'll find something I like. Then last year, I listened to a John Coltrane track - Mr Syms. And it was the coolest thing I had heard in months. It's like a cat walking through your ears, sauntering along. It's like something just clicked and suddenly I "got" it - I started to understand how Coltrane improvises, and how he goes off on tangents. Then all the rest of the album started making sense too.

I have a friend who is a great jazz drummer, and I played with his band once, just made me realise - these guys are really, really good; on a level I don't even get. The kind of improv they do is just such a huge step up from what I'm used to. So my little journey into jazz is just getting started!
