Marshall DSL100 too bright

Hi everyone,

Is it possible to mod the tone circuit of a Marshall DSL100 so that it has less of that horrible glassy treble. Even when I turn the presence know to 0 it is still too toppy with my Strats and Tele.

Run your strat and tele with 250k tone pots if they aren't already? ?

250K log pots all the way! My guitars sound great through any Fender amp. It's just this damn Marshall.

I REALLY want this amp to work but it's just too treble. It's just sooooooo anoying!

When you say treble... e string, or 15th fret on there?

I'm just speculating but Marshall's are very mid heavy and you might just be hearing an upper mid hump?

No, it's not mids, its definitely the high end. When I play my Strat on middle or neck pickups through the clean channel (I never use the overdrive channel) there is just way too much treble on the amp never mind what I do. I don't want to have to compensate with my tone knob on the guitar (always on 10).

I think if I can somehow mod the Marshall? I mean, why does my guitars sound good on my Fender deluxe and crap on the Marshall when I use their clean channels?

Yes and no. Yes it is possible but no, it is not for everyone ?

Have you heard the same thing on other DSL100s and have you rolled at least the preamp tubes, so as to exclude anything funny? Have you read reports on the net from others complaining about the same effect? I wouldn't mod unless I had made sure there wasn't a problem with the amp at hand.

IMO, when it comes to Clean , Fender wins,
when it comes to Overdrive , Marshall wins.

Perhaps your ears are just used to the well balanced cleans you are getting from your Fender.

Are you going straight into the amp, no multi effects or pedals?

If all else fails, perhaps there is a mod out there to soften the high end/ presence

My JCM 2000 DSL don't have this problem.
I have JJ tubes in and the cleans are amazing!!!

I even play my acoustic through the JCM! I don't think it is a JCM 2000 issue at all.

Nope, went through the whole test again, its still too treble.

Could it have anything to do with the fact that my 4x12 cab is loaded with Celestion Vintage 30's? ???
If it isn't then I reckon a Marshall DSL100 is just rubbish all around.

Careful! It could be your Marshall that is faulty.

Have you taken it to a technician yet?

I think Marshall's are overly bright, esp the DSL range, but tone is a subjective thing. If you play a Strat or Tele into a Marshall it is BRIGHT, much brighter and harsher than a Fender or Vox. I agree with Telefan's observations. You can mod the tone stack and bypass caps to soften/smooth things out a bit, but then it is no longer a Marshall so to speak... maybe you just need to sell it and get the right amp for your playing/tone?
