Those of you interested in sweeping, should really go back to the source - Frank Gambale:
Also, check out Shaun Lane (who was an amazing prodigy on guitar, keyboards and drums a well as many other, non musical areas):

I can vouch for Gambale. He pretty much "invented" the sweep techniques being used today. His DVD on modes is also AWESOME. Oh, and he plays great jazz ?

Dear lord Synyster Gates is messy.
If you wanna check out some more modern shredders who sweep like monsters here are two cool examples.

Sweeping....another thing that I struggle to do no matter how I try. That, and mixing two scales/modes together and to make it sound like something..

i dig sweeping...i find 3 string alot easier than 5 string though....
@Explorerlover you sure you doing it right?(not trying to insult you) just some people don't really know how to mute the strings properly, etc. also read he lesson on guy's website,he explains it really well there
Explorerlover
Wezz, none taken [insults]...that's probably the case....I'm open to any suggestions. I love playing rhythm , but sometimes the buds and myself stage our own G3 jam and I cannot get past playing variations on the Blues scale >☹ ...cool at first but damn.

ok well when sweep picking, the point is to play the notes individually and not make it sound like one chord or note(i.e they mustn't ring into each other)....
when you sweep, you MUST mute the strings after you play 'em and move to the next string, either do this with you picking hand(the side of your thumb, almost like pinch harmonics) or your fretting hand(when you play a note and then fret the next string, lift your finger up slightly on the previous string to mute it,really weird to explain) or to be safe,do both... normally what people do is use their picking hand to mute when they picking down and their fretting hand to mute when they going back up(this is what i kinda do)...
your fretting hand is important, the hardest part is to get your fretting hand and picking hand in sink(can't spell) with each other...also work on using your fingers as comfortably as possible, even if an exercise tells you to play it using certain fingers, say its a 5 string sweep that goes pinky(4),middle(2),index(1),ring(3),index(1),but it's more comfortable to go pinky(4),ring(3),middle(2),ring(3),index(1) then go for it...the more comfortable you are the easier it's gonna be to get correct...
also don't make the notes sound "picked" or "strummed"...they must flow into each other cleanly...it's important to get a good flowing downward and upward motion going...
pick angle, well that's completely up to you,you can hold it at a bit of an angle or hold it so that it is parallel to the strings when you hit 'em,totally up to you....
what i did was started off super slowly and got it dialed and then increased the speed, there's no point in playing it super fast and it sounds like a big mess...
see which is easier for you, some find 5 string sweeps easier than 3 and visa versa...
i attatched some sweeping exercises and shit that i learnt from
hope all this helps,i'm not that great at explaining :D
