Tolex Glue

Does anybody know what tolex glue is available here and where to get it?

I see the 3M products are widely used overseas.

I have absolutely no idea what you would use. Contact glue wouldn't give you any chance to reposition as you go. 3M are in SA maybe contact them via www.3m.co.za or on 011 806-2000 in JHB and see what they can offer locally.

Thanks Alan.....I am not keen on the regular contact route either because as you say you cannot reposition if you mess up.

There is a fairly large 3M supplier close to me so I recon I'll give them a visit and see what they come up with.

What about the spray in glues they use in car seats ..... I have seen it in some of the micas

I am also curious to see what this thread might uncover ? I have used contact glue so far, and I have been searching for a water based alternative. 3M might be the route to go. I have not found any products in Cape Town yet. My upholstery supplier does only contact glue.

My Dad was an Upholster all his life and the trick behind contact glues is to coat both surfaces and ..........wait until they are fairley dry before putting them together, also do it in sections much like wraping a gift

@ Atilla...Thanks for the comments. While contact is commonly used, I believe the glue for Tolex is a little different in that it allows one to lift and reposition the tolex to allow for the correction of mistakes etc. Some of them are also water based to allow for cleanup etc.

I see that Genkem and a few others do a water based contact adhesive.

I'm going to try this with my Tolex and see how that goes.Will keep you all posted.

When I did the bassman it was fun but I used Vinyl instead. it looked very porno afterwards. All I needed was an afro and bellbottoms...

I used contact glue and I've been using contact glue for ages for stuff like this. It can get very messy.

I'm getting stuck in (excuse the pun) this weekend.

Getting the water based Contact glue tomorrow morning.
Also need to get a 1/2" (12mm) router bit as the corners I route-rd was with a 3/8" (9.5mm) bit and will not allow the wrap-around metal corners to fit properly.

BTW the tolex/oxblood cloth and beading I ordered is going to look really good.

It's hard to tell how it will look when you look at the colours on the website, but the actural product look eve better than in the pics.

Ok...seems like I have found a nice water based glue that works really well for Tolex.

It is Alcolin "High Tac" carpet and vinyl glue.

Gives you a lot of working time while positioning and bonding the tolex to the cabinet, is water based so really easy to clean and you can use it indoors without going on a trip as there are no solvents. It allows you to lift and reposition the tolex if you got it skew.

It also applies easily with a brush.
