It's like having that last tequila when you know it's just not going to work for you... but you do it anyway. I bought a set of .009's why the hell not? It's been 15 years, maybe my fingers will like the ride. I'll tell you why not, because I feel like I'm playing over cooked toneless spaghetti that bends when I glance in its direction, that's why. Anyone want a week old set of strings? My D'Addario 10 - 52's will be back tonight. Kudos to the folks that can control those little 009 suckers.

Whaat? Those bastards! Just kidding, the set was probably R 79 ?

To answer your question (why did I spend): you spent it on finding out about your preferences. A lot more GAS money goes into finding out which particular guitar, effect or amp is to your liking, so be pleased this one cost only R89 R79,- 8)

The part that irks me is that I already know my preferences but I think you're right, sometimes you've gotta check...

.009s aren't worth it once you've moved on. Harps in heaven may sound good strung with angel hair, but a rock guitar deserves some real wires. ?

...until you start playing 12 string, then you're sooo happy that they're there...

Yep, use 11s on my tele - too scared to try 13s for fear of bowage 8)
WantzChas
I used to play .009's. Have a set of .011's on now and love them. Will drop to 10's again eventually.
Manfred-Klose
i started out with 008. on a 25.5''.
I am now at 010.
its amazing how much easier a tele plays with thicker strings.

I love using nines they are easy on your fingers and bend so effortless. I use to use ten but My fingers would hurt after a 1 hour session.
Gearhead
Son, it is supposed to hurt - even SRV sometimes went down from .013 to .011 for a live show if his fingers hurt too much.
But a hour.... I thought you liked playing heavy metal? Well .009 is not very heavy as metal goes, is it? ?

tell me, do you guys have nut files and things the way you whip between string gauges? When you put a fatter set in dont you need to modify the slots?

I wish I did have files, take the guit to the shop instead.
Once your slots are cut for .012 // .052 your thinner strings will sit just fine. Can you feel .002" of sideways play?
BMU
Nines are fun - effortlessly getting a ridiculously wide vibrato is nothing to sneeze at! I used to fluctuate between 9s and 10s but settled on 10s lately.
10s on a 26.5" neck, std tuning, I find pretty tough to bend, I guess that's close to what 11s feel like. I was going to switch to 9s but surprisingly, I've started adapting. I'm chuffed! Now 9s on a 25.5" definitely feel a bit too slinky.

Well I just started playing guitar when I used those strings. Jeff hanneman from slayer(which is pretty heavy)uses nines
MikeM
What does he tune to?
Seventhson
Half a step down. Thats the tunibg I use.

To clarify on fingers hurting with string guages... there's always been one sure-fire cure-all. Suck it up.
'10s will give you the twanginess of '9s and 3/4 of the tone of '11s. Pain is inevitable with any of them. Even 8s will eventually gyrate a callus, so its best to suck it up. Even nylons can give blisters.
But hey, to each their own ?
MikeM
Light strings now hurt my fingers. Make em feel like cheese with the wire splitting them in half.. Ugh ?
