Criticism rule of thumb

There's something that needs to be said about what I read in the Watershed thread... I've got a rule of thumb when it comes to criticising: whatever I say, and whatever tone of voice I say it in in any forum (online or in person) I should be prepared to say to the artist in question if they were right in front of me. I have felt strongly enough in the past to be quite outspoken to artists who in my youth offended me - I once told Adam Duritz from Counting Crows that their three guitar "attack" was unnecessary given how boring their music was. I'm feel bad now about how I said it and he probably didn't give a hoot about my opinion since millions obviously love them...

A lot of opinions on opinions... cool. Reading the posts I've re-thought my statement and figure that context of discourse is important i.e. in this context (GFSA) we need to maintain the tone of the forum, on 4chan sound off any way you like. People also tend to the worst because of the anonymity of the net and that's what I was trying to get at... this forum is NOT that anonymous because the pool of players, professionals, hobbyists etc. in SA is very small. Not that that's the reason to be civil!

Does anyone else find however that rather harsh critism is sometimes entertaining/just right for the situation. you can use the Nicholous loue example. He is really just a guy who realised he can tap into the affrikaanse market and make awful music. I dont think he gets to much crtitism from his peers and the numerous swoons af drunken afrikaanse that watch him at his shows. So personally I reckon a lttile bit of critism will do him good. However I would not so harshly critisize a band of teens who has just started up and for other words "are no good" Because they are often playing to the best of there knowlege and ability, and in a few years with some constructive crits will possible be very good.
Does anyone here read Pitchfork (online music mage) which has MILLIONS of readers daily. If they award you any more than 5 out of 10 you will have alot more attention as a band after the review, in the sense of millions. They recently gave a guy called WAVES in the USA 10 out a 10, howver he recorded on his HI FI, and it frankly sounded to me awful, but they gave him some amazing review, maybe because he had the right senitment at heart.
THEN they reviewed the BAND "JET" you know that song "do you wanna be my girl" In the review they simply put a video of a monkey peeing into its own mouth , a sign that they were not even worth the review. WHY probably becasue JET are not old school rockers with that cool indie vibe like on CD singing about girls and dancing BUT a bunch of Ausies who said hey lets make this music to get famous and write crap albums which are very cliche and are nothing original.
I found this review of Jet very appropriate.

Mika this is your 2nd warning. Please don't use GFSA to disrespect fellow members, musos, instruments, or whatever it is that you dislike. You are MORE than welcome to your opinion and you can express it in ANY way you like. Just not HERE. When someone thinks of "GuitarForum.co.za", the last thing I want them to think is, "Oh yeah, those disrespectful sods." If you can't keep it clean, keep it off the forum.
