does anyone have any tips on getting some pretty thick guitar tone using garage band and guitar rig 3.1 ? I know most of the thickness comes in mixing, but i want a good start ..

In the sites section there is a couple of posts about sites that list rock stars gear. You go to the site, find out what your favorite shredder uses and build that same rig.
I am also willing to bet that there is a place on the net where people share GR rigs....

Sometimes its all about layering!
Double tracking and multiple channels of effects.
Try 1 channel with a warm low distortion and one with a mid range crunch. You could even add a clean chorus under that for some shimmer.
