weird strings

tonight i was tuning to E flat and had gotten to the high E string, i was de-tuning it when for no visible reason it broke. why did this happen?

Some times thats happens. Maybe there was a fault in the string.

How long had the strings been on the guitar?

i had just put that string in about 2 weeks ago, i usually use ernie balls but this time all they had left where d'arrios, what would have happened to it

The exact same thing happen to me once. Mine broke at the tuning peg. The only thing I can think of it the string was under a lot of stress at its position after being turned back. It wasnt wound very well though. The strings where kindda going over each other and stuff like that. But my strings where a lot older then yours.

If you're changing tension on strings by tuning up or down it does shorten the life of the string. Metal fatigue from tension changes I would guess. Anyway, it happens.
