@ Bob - Well, having lots of technique doesn't mean that there's nothing to be said.
And I didn't say it did. There's a difference between having a vocabulary and having something to say. Technique is a guitarist's vocabulary.
We could have fun by drawing a graph with two axes....
Something to say on the Y axis, technique on the left. The ideal would be the top right corner - guys with monster technique and using it to tell a story or deliver a message. Top left corner would be guys with all technique and no ideas (and probably no taste). Bottom right would be the guys who are not great technicians but still make a worthwhile musical statement.
I doubt you or I would agree on who goes where on the graph though.
Think of it this way, given your vocabulary, do u sometimes go "There must be a better way to say/write this" ?
Also, to a very large degree, the people who are good at what they do, tend to talk less about what they do.
Something i learnt at a brazilian jiujitsu lesson... " The loudest guy in the room is usually the weakest".
I'm never convinced by these little bon mots. You can get a guy who will sit quietly in the corner and not brag, and then get up on stage and indulge in musical masturbation for 45 minutes. He's still sounding off. People can be humble or shy in one sphere, brash in another.
