Wonder if you'd all be so kind as to advise me. I am pretty new to the guitar thing, I have just been whackin the heck out of the guitars I've owned and sold and lost and got stolen for the past 12 months or so and now I'm getting interested in playing around with the workings of electric guitars. Right now I am keen to know more about pickups and how to wind them and what produces what sound. What I have found is a book " Pickups: Windings and Magnets... and the Guitar Became Electric" which seems pretty decent but before I buy it, has anyone read it - is it OK? another book by someone called Lollar but out of print. So, is there anything else you can suggest. Cheers - Ray

The one by Lollar is the one you want ?

If the book is anywhere near the price of Lollar pickups, you might want to think about buying the pup ?

The Pickups: Windings and Magnets book is a bad translation of a badly written and organised Italian book. It has some useful info, but scattered around the book with no useful index. More a history of pickups than a how-to.
The Lollar is the one to get - everyone starts out with that. Jason is releasing an ebook version soon, mostly to stop the selling of pirated copies for $300+ on ebay.
Otherwise, while outdated, Guitar Electronics for Musicians by Donald Brosnac is still a must-have.
Animal Magnetism by Erno Zwaan is another one to have in your library - more focused on bass pickups, but has lots of good info that is universal to all pickups.
