Good point Alan.
I own a Bose L1 Model 2 which I bought here in SA, sure I could have got it less in the Stateside, but add VAT/duties, shipping and the fact it is 110V and there is no support. If it breaks down Audiotech (Bose agents in SA) will not repair it out of goodwill, fat chance... you will need to, at your expense, ship it back to the USA for repairs... simple... even Apple only have an international policy on portables, if you buy a desktop overseas and it breaks down here... you are in for a BIG surprise 8)
You are also not factoring in your VAT and Ad Valorem duties, take your price of $1198 then x 7.6% then x 14% = $1469.51 xR7.60 = R11,168.28 vs the local price you quoted of R16,500.00. Also by the way I feel your $150 shipping is overally conservative based on the weight, and what about insurance?
AudioTech is more expensive, but I've been very impressed with their service. I first heard the L1 at a tradeshow in JHB, I live in CPT, I called them up and they couriered it down to me to try out for a week, no questions asked. I then decided to take it, got a what I thought was a fair price. I've since needed some replacements parts/accessories and had them within a week of ordering... can you do that with Sweetwater?
I'm sure they can do a better cash price on the Compact if you try, contact Matt from Music Madness, he is on the Forum, and see what he can do. I'm sure they can accommodate you if you are a serious about buying one. I don't expect they can match the USA street price, but they will do the best they can I'm sure.
Cheers
Matt

I was inthe same predicament looking at the Bose L1 Compact. It is $999 in the states and the cost to ship here is $199. So that is a total of (counts toes..) $1198.
In country of origin. Have you considered that'll be a 110V unit from the US? I suppose if you are willing to use a stepdown transformer or have it modified and do without the guarantee...
