Finally we have someone selling pickups online locally: www.tonerider.co.za We've spoken about the Tonerider pickups before, and the agency is now being handled by André Meyer (some of the CT members will know him already from the band Late Final), who also plans to move into other parts, hardware and spares (up to and including necks and bodies) over the next year.

Now have to wait till 5 to go home to fiddle, recorded something as a before if anyone is interested.

Were you ever able to record something? I'm very keen to hear what these pick ups sound like, get your opinion. I'm pretty keen on getting a set of these, I like the variety of tone these can get. ?

I'm sure this was already asked in this thread, but will these fit in Ibanez SA series?? HSS configuration? I can't see a set of these on the website, must i buy separate p-ups? Which will sound good for blues/rock? City Limits looks cool?? ALLEN, SOMEONE, HELLLP!!! hehe ?

Yes, you'll have to buy separate pickups to make up an HSS set. PM AndreM and ask his recommendations - he knows them best of anyone.

I did yes, wasnt sure what to play etc so just played chords, recorded old and recorded the new pickups in the exact same way. Difference to me was clarity and note seperation, when the new ones were in the old ones just sound so muddy. I switch from neck to middle to bridge.

New Pickups (right click save target as)

Old Pickups (right click save target as)

not sure if that helps at all but its the only recording I made.

All you have to do is like Alan says - make up a set yourself. Look at the type of music you play and then put together your own set. Just read about the different set on the tonerider website. Like Oprah says - y'all gotta read more!

Pity the loose ones aren't on special! And I want to replace all the pickups because i use all 5 of the configurations... Oh well R1200 is not too bad... more than I payed for the guitar though!

Ordered my Generators on Friday, and received them today. Excellent stuff...

Ditto - Installed them last night, set the heights and intonation nicely and didn't put the guitar down again until around 1AM this morning. It's funny what an inspiring new sound on your guitar can do to you huh? Everything changes and you've got to cover all the musical ground of the past year, just to hear whether you can play things better now. :?

I can only say nice things about Tonerider. Great pickups, great service, excellent packaging!

IceCreamMan

decided toneriders is my next gas project.

is it a mission to install?

Your questions were perfectly legitimate and I'll gladly clarify even further!

Installed an Alnico IV neck in my Epiphone Les Paul, with a Generator bridge. I'm in love! Posting clips later.. ?

Right my experience , installing HSS (rocksong , blues classic , blueclassic) into an Ibanez SA series guitar.

I tested the impedince of the toneriders out of the box..

Neck : Claimed 6.3 actual 6.07 ibanez pup = 5.07

Mid : Claimed 6.6 actual 6.42 ibanez pup = 5.47

Bridge : CLaimed 12 actual 11.87 ibanez pup = 6.87

Differences are minor and between < 1% and 4%. Can be attributable to my multimetres (digital mid range item). At these levels i have no qualms.

I had downloaded the guitar wiring diagram and the tonerider info from website together having asekd loads of questions.

Took measurements of string heights and made a diagram of current wiring (which was identical to the guitar wiring diagram so made it all easy)

REmoved the standard pups starting from the neck down. started installing from the neck down.

One thing i did find is that the mid tonerider ,the wiring thereof just reaches the toggle switch so keep that in mind. soldered everything (i aint an expert in soldering) ..reset the height of the humbucker BUt a problem on the single coils is that one cannot adjust the height and the recess for the pups are deep..

completed soldering put everything together. was late so could not play to loud but very happy with the tone. Neck pup not working properly and i think thats due to soldering an will suss it out later (prolly not earthing)

These were the impedience results after installation an checking at the end of a lead

Neck : 0.27 ?? did not have time to check this out but undoubtedly a soldering issue and will suss it out

Mid : 6:27

Bridge : 11.54

Again more questions (never stops sorry)

1. With the single coils and the deep recess of the ibanez I am looking at doing a "shimming" job and will need washers about 10 to 12 mm thick with an aperture of about 1.5 mm's(almost like a deep washer) . Can i use metal or does it have to be plastic/rubber. (the tonerider pup comes with a rubber grommet that is too easily maleable and not thick enough resulting in the pup being to far below the string.

2. I noticed that previously a tech had soldered the earth wiring to the tone pot and not the Volume pot , i assume there is no difference in this as everything worked fine but i did earth everything to the volume pot as per diagram.

3. Issue with the neck pup , could it be anything else but earthing?

4. Not related to installation but the Toneriders came with no idetification on them cept a sticker which removes easily ... i suspect this is to allow them to be branded under different names , is it possible that these are high end units sold at great pricing?

Thanks all , appreciate the assistance on this.

All in all i am very happy with the tone and clarity of the toneriders and recommend them to all.

Installed and played mine last night for a bit, and they are working like a dream...I'll record a bit later...Could I just mention I LOVE the packaging they came in. It just scream class...none of that plastic housing you see on the others.

Now, excuse my ignorance, but how do I test the impedance? I'm just curious as I see it mentioned here quite a few times...! I live with an engineer, so I'm sure I can borrow/steal any multimeters I might need...

[deleted]

You can't set the height on the single coils? Why not? If you adjust the screws that hold them in place, you should be able to raise them proud from the scratchplate surface without a problem. Please explain.

Ja, check the soldering of the neck pickup again - that's most likely the issue.

Also, I don't think the identification by sticker has anything to do with rebranding. They just don't have other branding stamped onto them. Did you remove the stickers? I don't think you should do that, since at a later stage when and if you remove them, you'll not know which is which...

Easy way is to plug a lead into guitar. Takemultimeter and take the red wire and place it at tip of the jack (which is the end u put into amp) and the black wire along the bottom of the jack ...then use toggle switch to get reading from each pup.

i was ignorant of this til yesterday too

dee

Thanks a bunch. Will try it tonight...

If it was up to me to figure out I would be poking the poor pickup with the multimeter ends all night trying to get a reading!
