Changed my mind now, going to combine a generator bridge with a alnico 4 bridge and put it in the neck position of my Epi les paul custom. Hopefully they'll be on their way by tomorrow?
Yeehaa! ?

Well guys just so you can all breathe easy, the jack has finally given out on the Epi. Seems there must've been a cold or crappy solder on it. After some fiddling, it's all good, but it needs to be replaced. Strange, it only came around when I modded my TS9 (This weekend I think) cause I had to ramp up the tone and level to get a decent sound out of it..
Thanks for the concern tho guys ?

Wow, what a surprise, I've never had such an easy transaction. ? I ordered my pickups from Tonerider Tuesday afternoon and paid with EFT, phoned my Post Office yesterday morning with my tracing number and the package was already there. ?
I ordered a Generator bridge and an Alnico IV bridge. Last night I installed them into my Les Paul. The Alnico IV bridge went into my guitar's neck position. Big difference! I think the combination that I picked is perfect and would recommend it to anyone. The pickups that were in the guitar before were DiMarzio but I have no idea which models since there weren't any numbers on them other than the name. The Dimarzios were cream colored but the Toneriders that I ordered are Zebra colored and they looks really cool in my guitar.
In my guitar the Generator bridge pickup is nice and powerful and has strong upper mids and nice not-too-loud low end. Its very balanced sounding and with my GT-8 its perfect for driving my overdrive patches and then the high end just stands out very nicely too. I don't want to be clever but I can say it's similar to a Seymour Duncan JB that I've got in another guitar. The neck is thick and creamy and I get all my favorite Gary Moore sounds on it. I had to play around a bit with the height settings to get the sound and balance just right. Clean they sound great too. In the middle position I get a nice sparkling funky sound that is really good for clean rhythm. The neck pickup sound warm and creamy when I play my own version of jazz (not too good) and the bridge pickup on its own clean is hard to describe because I hardly ever use it like that but it certainly has lots of balls when I play it cleanly though.
In my view I can echo what others are saying here about Tonerider and that is that these pickups are really good and serious value for money. The Tonerider website is also excellent, the pictures are fantastic and I downloaded the wiring diagrams which helped me along very nicely, not that I didn't know how to solder 4 little wires in a Les Paul.
I just hope they don't increase their prices soon. ?

What are you doing with the DiMarzio's that came out? (not a hint :? )
andrewjbryson
yea where are them Dimarzio's going ?
If you can find a model numer on them , you will be able to tell which model it is.
example :
DP155 - Tone Zone
DP153 - FRED

DiMarzio Pickups without model numbers on are usually the original Super Distortion. Especially with the double cream coils, which was the distinctive thing about them.

Ok so now everybody knows what they are, but not what they cost and whether they can be shipped ?

I checked again - there's no serial numbers on them. They must be from the 80's or so. My dad bought the guitar secondhand about 25 years ago and these were already installed at the time.
Believe me they sounded like nothing special. I'll hang on to them though just in case some guitar mega star a**hole ? in the USA mentions them and then the whole world goes into a frenzy just like the did with the vastly overrated PAF's and I benefit from owning pups worth a lot of money on the vintage market. ?
The Tonerider pickups sound much better. I'm sure in 25 years time they'll still sound great! ?

Does anyone have info on the Tonerider Classic Blues set? I'm considering getting a set while prices are still good. Your opinions would help a lot. ?

It's a nice set, good sound, balanced in volume, nice low end and smooth highs on all three pickups. I always like a humbucking pickup in the bridge but this is a good set. For the price you're not going to find anything that will beat it.

Sorry to bother you with a stupid question ? but is there anyone here who can compare Tonerider Strat pickups with EMG's or may have interchanged a set, just as a comparison.
30/01/2010: I am modifying this post since I've discovered that EMG's are in fact low output pickups with preamps built into them and need batteries to make them as loud as normal pickups. So, pardon my stupidity but I'm a wiser man and I know NOW that you can't really compare the two. It would be like asking someone to compare a cellphone with a regular phone - I suppose? ? (meaning that a land-line phone still sounds better and clearer when held to your ear compared to a cell phone, yet the cell phone is infinitely more complex in design)

Are these pickups standard American sizes? Prices are too good to ignore but I just want to be sure.
Reason I ask is because I bought a set of Golden Age pickups a while ago from a parts supply company only to discover that they didn't fit exactly into the cavities where my existing pickups came out of. ☹

All Tonerider pickup models are 100% compatible with all US Gibson or Fender guitars. This is what they've been designed to do - to be retrofitted into these guitars. ?
And on the "prices are too good to ignore" comment - a free shipping option is available from today so that's yet another thing you can't ignore! - Hope I can say this ?

Hi floydoid, both will work well, it just depends what sort of output you're looking for. Generators have Alnico IV (5) magnets and are a hotter wind than the Rocksong pickups, which features Alnico II (2) magnets.
Just go to the tonerider website and read the specs of the two sets. This will give you some insight as to which model will be more suitable for your guitar.

Never mind..
I'm thinking of going A2 neck (7.6k) and generator bridge...

Hi all,
I've been tossing these Tonerider humbuckers around in my mind for a while and I also looked at what MikeM said here and eventually ordered a Generator bridge and Alnico IV neck. Fetched them Friday morning at the PO and couldn't resist installing them Saturday afternoon before the gig. Panicked a bit cause I left it a bit late and had just enough time to set heights etc and re-tune the guitar and so forth - typical me!
Great combination. I installed into an old 80's Modified Strat with 2 humbuckers and no middle pickup. The Generator in the bridge is nice and raunchy with a lots of tone, screams with overdrive solos and has a really nice smooth top end and thudding lows.
The neck Alnico IV is surprisingly good cause I've never really found a neck pickup that I really liked. What I like here is that it balances very well with the bridge Generator and has a nice smooth clear sound and very even with no overtones at all, not even with serious gain.
These pickups also have the split coil wiring but I guess I'll have to wait to get push-pulls for a nice Telecaster twang tone. Anyone have a diagram somewhere to do this?
I have to say the guy Andre from Tonerider in Cape Town was very helpful on the telephone and had to put up with my questions for about 20 minutes. :-[ Thanks man! Next time I'll read the specs first before I phone. ?

I recommend going parallel instead of coil splitting if it's an HH guitar. It's close to a single coil tone, but hum free..

Close, but no banana...
